Only the gunner position is open...so if u wana get shot up sign right up...or u could just join the army.

From what i understand trades will re-open next february
Just exactly Gunners have you heard about who have been shot in the last six months? I hate it when people just assume that if you join the military in a combat role then you will get shot and die.

Have a care there mate, Lossiemouth is one of the stations where Regiment gunners have been killed in recent times.
Yes, the risk is low relative to other branches of the forces but it is the risk we all assume and it is a fact of life that it can happen.

Supplier is closed until February according to my AFCO, I'm getting put on the reserve list and was told that unless someone drops out I'm looking at a Feb/March joining date.

I spoke to OASC today - the branches (commissioned) that I applied for have closed - Flight Ops and Supply. They will reopen next financial year (April) and those first places (as I understand) will go to people who have passed OASC recently and have been placed on hold.

Pilot, ATC, Aerospace Battle Manager, Reg and Medical are still open.

Well I passed my apitude test on monday and was advised that most of the trades are unavailable (still got the list) only 3 being open are Dental technician, student nurse (adult) and musician.

I asked when Aerospace Systems Operator might be open again and was told "We are hoping before Christmas this year, but if could be as late as April"

Though I'm willing to wait, if nothing else it gives me plenty of time to work on my fitness.

Went into my local AFCO center yesterday with a friend who is applying, same story there. He looked into ICT specialist but no more new applications will be taken for that untill November.

Still its rather backed up as i applied last year but my join date is next March, its worth the wait in the long run though!

No-one knows. The Manning staff will meet, probably about once a month, and look at all the figures for manning levels, people leaving, people deciding not to leave at option points, service needs, specific influences (change of role, change of equipment, moving location etc), money available etc and on the basis of all those variables will decide to open a trade/branch up again, or not. If they decide to open a trade/branch then they tell the AFCOs to start recruiting.

It seems that for most trades and branches they have simply recruited sufficient people for this financial year, and so they may not open until the April '10 decision making cycle (I'm not sure at what point they start to 'cost' people, so I don't know if that means accepting people at the AFCO to start selection or at basic training in Apr '10). On the other hand, some trades may be especially sensitive to having big gaps in recruitment and may need to run professional training courses, so some trades and branches may open.

Keep in close contact with the AFCO. Unless they tell you not to contact them until such and such a date, then ring them every week to check, it's your career and they offer career advice. If they aren't actively recruiting they might just as well talk to you, it's their job!
