I'm starting at Nottingham this september and I'll be starting my first year of an undergraduate degree in American Studies, from looking on the universities website for this year first year American Studies students had 40 points of free electives. If that's the same this year which I imagine it will be then I'll probably have 20 free credits a semester, what I'm wondering is if I could study French in my first year as my free elective. Has anyone who is currently there done this or know how likely it is for me to do this? I only have basic French knowledge (grade B at GCSE) so I'll probably have to study beginner French.
Any info greatly appreciated as I really want to learn French!

That'll be no problem, you can learn French in the language centre with your free credits. They have different levels for people with different qualifications (I believe it's level one for complete beginner, two if you have a GCSE in the language etc). Several of my friends do this and it is entirely possible, you just register for the module in week one.

Inter faculty language courses are only 10 credits each per semester though, so you will still need to find other modules you are interested in.

Also, don't leave it too long after term starts to sign up, as the beginner level modules fill up particularly quickly. I couldn't get on to some of the modules I wanted to do and ended up just taking reeeeally weird ones.

yeah, don't panic about it, just don't sit around once you've seen your tutor and they've told you what you need to do to sign up to it all. One of the things I wanted to get on was in the buisiness school and their courses fill up five minutes after they give the subsid talk (you should get a booklet or something telling you when different depts have theirs).

The main reason I didn't get my first choice modules was that I spent most/all of freshers week drunk, hungover or both and ended up leaving it very very late to sign up for modules. There are so many though, you'll always find some that you find interesting.
