I am an IB student doing the English A1 HL course applying to Oxford University for History and English. I do, however, have a question regarding the English written work (2 essays) that applicants are supposed to send when applying.

I am sending an essay I recently wrote on Hamlet and Feminist Literary theory.

However, for the second essay, I was hoping to send one of my World Literature assignments. I was wondering if this is allowed/is a good idea as it is an essay on a novel originally written in French.

If the essay itself is written in English, I don't see why it should be a problem, really.

I know nothing about English applications and what they look for, but a potential problem with World Lit. (iirc) is that you're not expected to discuss the language in the text itself (as it's in translation), but focus on things like context and events in the text. If they're looking for evidence of ability in analysing language (stuff about connotations of specific words etc.) then it's not a great piece of work to send. However, if you discuss language in the other essay you're sending it might be positive to also send a World Lit. essay which focuses more on other ways of approaching a text.

Yeah... I'll probably end up sending one of my World Lit assignments and an essay I have on Hamlet (not the feminist theory one), as it deals more with language as opposed to social context. I guess that I'll be able to show analytical skills in terms of language use and historical/socio-political context this way.
