Im off to UoM in September and I'm thinking of going into private accommodation instead of the halls because it seems it could be alot cheaper. My questions is does anyone ever do this and if anyone else wants to do it??

P.s. I'd probably want to be near Fallowfield so I dont miss out

Wut? I hope you mean private house, because private halls are much more expensive.

Tbh, I'd say don't. You'll miss out on a lot of the social interaction being in halls gives you. And plus, all the good houses are pretty much gone now, so youll most likely end up in one of the grotty houses, or you'll end up living with 3rd years or something who will either not want a fresher living with them or who will be in quite a different mindset to you.

That being said, if your heart is set on it, do it, but there's a lot that can make you not enjoy it.

^ Ditto. UoM offers some cheap (albeit terrible value for money) halls, I really think it's worth going into halls.

Halls is worth it just to meet people. It makes socialising so much easier in the first year. The only people I know who didn't live in halls in their first year were local and living at home.

Well thanks for the useful responses, but I think I am going to go for a flat for my first year :P I found a useful forum on www.manchesterstudenthomes.com with plenty of peeps looking for private accommodation. From what I've seen so far it will work out cheaper, and hopefully I can make plenty of friends in other ways (miracles may happen)

    Cheers
