Before the recession, when there was a record amount of graduate jobs created in the finance industry, how competitive was it, could you still find yourself easily finding a job, were there still applicants per place, etc?

Big4 were struggling to get the right candidates. We had vacancies not filled in some offices (they would sooner take no-one than lower their standards) and they recruited year round. Now with less positions and less grads going to big banks these positions are being filled very early in the academic year e.g. we did hardly any recruiting March-August this year. But as it's a case of the first people to meet the criteria get an offer, in theory it's no more tough if you apply early. Think we've cut our grad intake by about a third? A guess/estimate, it varies massively across departments.

Dunno about banks, imagine they were harder hit by the recession.

I'm joining Deloitte in corporate tax this year and I know that for the 2008 intake my office were still hiring through to May, whereas for this years intake all of the positions had been filled by September, just a month or two after the applications first opened.
