Who, in your opinion, was one of the greatest intellectuals/academics in history and why?

In my opinion one of the greatest was Leonhard Euler a mathematician who lived in the 18th century and was one of the most radical and productive thinkers in mathematics. He popularised mathematical notation that is still used today, produced huge amounts of papers and articles and was able to perform amazingly complex equations in his head to a high level of accuracy. There are many other reasons, and please add the ones you can think of.

Socrates/Plato/Aristotle are obvious choices from the ancient world, though people like Heroclitus and Parmenides before them were important too. For more modern philosophers see Descartes, Hume, Kant, Russell and Wittgenstein (among others).

Science wise - Galileo, Newton and Einstein win it hands-down. Though there are also millions of important mathematicians: Euclid, Euler (as was said) Hardy, plus many more.

Literature, well, Shakespeare's the obvious choice. Loads of others to choose from, and foreigners shouldn't be forgotten - Voltaire and Goethe for example.

Newton is the daddy when it comes to modern science. He trumps all others.

    in before stephen fry.

maybe Francis Bacon? one of the most influential scientists surely.
if not perhaps St Paul or if you'd count them Jesus, Mohammed, Buddha, any of those religious guys.
Lucius Junius Brutus, the guy that overthrew the Roman kings and established the Senate
then Marx and Engels have had a huge influence on the world especially in the 20th century.

in literature probably Homer Ovid Dante maybe Shakespeare? they seem to come up a lot even now

Those who worked on theories of evolution seem to be pretty amazing. They completely changed the way in which the world and creation was seen: Lamarck, Wallace, Darwin...

I think the theory of evolution pretty much wins unless you're one of those weird religious folk that think the earth is 4000 years old and theres a magic man floating in the sky.

Other than that, George Carlin. the intellectual of our time.

Richard Feynman is pretty much without a doubt the greatest human being who ever lived.

Anyone who has read 'Surely You're Joking..." can attest to this.

Galileo - I guess we owe the structure of modern science to him.

Marx - Addressed Capitalism and founded the basics of Communism, basically shaping the 20th century as far as political philosophy goes.

    Darwin.
