I'm just curious, really. I know it has a lot to do with the RAE, and read somewhere it's based on research power, but don't have anything concrete.
Does anyone know exactly?

Apparently not enough to fund me to do an MSc vital to the survival of this country. [/not exaggerating]

About half of the research money comes from the RAE, the other half from various sources such as research council and privately funded projects. The bit that comes from the RAE is worked out on quality and quantity- and it goes up exponentially. In other words, the more 4* 'world class' work you do, the better, as this is worth much more than 3*, which is much more than 2 etc. The breakdown is somewhere. In terms of quantity, its purely on numbers submitted- this is why Warwick is somewhere like 6th on overall quality but about 18th in terms of share of the pot. I think THES ran an article on how much English and Welsh universities would be getting a couple of months back.
