Anti-fascists clash with right-wing protesters in Birmingham

    Sep 5 2009

There were angry clashes in a city centre today as right-wing protesters fought with anti-fascist campaigners in a busy shopping street.

A planned demonstration by The English Defence League in central Birmingham descended into violence as the group charged along New Street, close to the city's main train station.

One onlooker said: "There were about 250 people in total, fighting and throwing bottles at each other."

The disorder spilled onto the adjoining Bennetts Hill, a street lined with a number of pubs, popular with shoppers.

Dozens of riot police worked to contain the disturbance and a police helicopter hovered overhead.

A police spokeswoman said there had been "pockets" of trouble but could not confirm whether any arrests had been made.

Second time this has happened in Brum. They've actually banned the English Defence League from protesting in Luton. Now we can see exactly why...

I knew this was going to happen, again!. The last thing I read in my local paper was that the council was trying to get the meeting banned.

I agree. If they did a more non violence approach like go on a hunger strike or lay themselves on the roads, i would have more sympathy for the anti fascists.

I was told by the UAF that it would be the BNP, and so i signed the petition... it turns out that it was just the EDL who go out of their way to deny racism and association with the BNP... their message is logical... surely even most muslims are against islamic extremism.

Birmingham is turning into a battle ground! I wasn't there today, but i (unfortunately) happened to be in town at the last one in August and in all fairness to the EDL-the racism and heightening of tensions was being caused by the UAF and the Black and Asian lads who were using the day as an opportunity to attack any White kid who was on his own. As i said though, i have no clue about what happened this time but it seems as though the UAF are opposed to anyone who dares to criticise elements of Islam.
The UAF are hypocrites imo. They always talk about how they are against racism but last time when the Asian and Black kids were attacking lone White guys (most of whom it seemed to me were just in the wrong place at the wrong time), the UAF didn't do a thing despite the fact that it was their lies about the "BNP" being in town (rather than the EDL) which was the cause of the violence. Obviously according to them it's only racism when it's White directed on ethnic minority

If what happened last time is anything to go by, the UAF probably caused most of the trouble today as well.

Most ordinary Brummies don't want them in our city! They cause too much trouble!!

Right! the economy and ignorance are the problems here, I saw the riots and it can be seen that POOR unemployed ignorant idiots were to blame. The recession was always going to create racial problems! it happens all over the world I.E Germany 1930's!!!!!!

Birmingham is a beautiful city full of people who want to get on and live hormoniously. There are people in all cultures always looking for a fight! If we let these people hijack the city with their own racist adgendas, we tolerant and peaceful people will pay the ultimate price.

Brtiain even in its time of empire ( i am a history specialist) has always been a tolerant occupier. It always allowed different religions to keep their id's.

For those that dont know, migration happend in europe becuse the Europeans in the 21st century couldnt even live in a mono-european society. So you tell me, is discrimination going to leave the shores of britian with the dispelling of ethnics? NO!

Today the muslims, tomorrow the jews, the no one else but the U, adn nobody will be around to help you.

If anything this country is stronger richer and more vibrant!

So for the idiot who wants to shoot the "darkies" how about u get an education? or read a book you'll see that genocide does more harm than good.!

What we need to do is have a common brummie identity!!! I have some gr8 ideas, This will help unite us beyond myths of racist ignorance ( from all sides) and help us all realise black or white we british and should be proud!
