I've been to look around London City University and the surrounding area.

My god, it is a dump.

Please see this thread: http://www.admissionsforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=10250

" i lived in that festering humanity depleted hell hole for four years. " comment by someone who lives there.

uptil now I have been excited about going to London. But looking around this place I don't think I'm going to do it now

London is an expensive place to live in thats no doubt if you want a good environment. There are good places in Angel i will move to with my friends. It is very important to have a good friends to live with. because you will want a good environment, but students, what can you expect. if you want good environment and demanding then you'll have to fork extra money. Or do it like onme of my friends do, cut the living room to half lol.

Anyways it totally depends on yourself. Crime depends where you go in London anyways.

Hey Neocortex!
I am a bit curious. Are you a boy or a gal?
London is an exciting city to live, but wil all majot cities there will be poverty and crime. To avoid that in London, get a place in Kengsington

For real, there are millions of 'upper' class 'clean areas, and on the other hand there are millions of 'lower' class areas (some clean/others not). You just have to decide where you want to live, the whole city isnt in shambles...but its gonna cost ya!

I've visited City University and if I were you I wouldn't go there. The place seems to over rate themselves and to me it didn't seem as welcoming as most other Universities. Also, I don't know if you've checked out their halls of residence but I had a look at one of them (can't remember the name but it was near the Northampton Square campus) and I've seen far better halls at places like Kingston, etc.

Have you applied to any Universities yet? What offers do you have? Not all of London is as bad as Angel and there are places far better!

Angel and Old Street area in NOT a bad place to live. Trust me.

I think the people you meet there is the most important factor. The people make up the entire environment. If you get along with the people, you will find a lot of joy in your study time. The place itself is dull and uninteresting.....
I'm going to Goldsmiths and that area is quite scary as well, but just don't go around on your own at night. It's the course and to make friends you are going for, not the area. You can always commute from another area of London in the second year. City is between a few major tube lines so a few minutes commute is worth it if you live in a better (more expensive) area.

City Uni is the only place in London that does Optometry.

What did you think of the area when you walked around?

It seems okay-ish during the day, though there seem to be a lot of high rise old ugly 60s type apartment blocks. Around Angel there seemed to be lots of low-lifes loitering around

The area is fine.....I've lived there almost all my life and I'm fine.

Do you live in Angel or Old Street? Did you go to City and Islington?

I live slightly further up off Upper Street nearer Highbury Corner, I went to Central Foundation up until year 11, now I go to Greycoats.

Greycoats is a girl's school in Westminister...

Have you heard of Kingsway in King's Cross?
Most of London is absolutely fine. Act like you know what you're doing, and not some upper class rich kid, and you'll be alright. It's really not that bad at all. And if you really don't want to live there, London transport is good enough that you can easily get to City without actually living in the locale.

City and Aston are the best Universities in England for optometry!

Thanks - that's great to know. I'm from Newcastle upon Tyne and a bit apprehensive.

Please please can you tell me what you think of East Central House. There are some pictures on http://www.accommodationforstudents.com/largerprivatestudenthousing/lphs.asp?id=18

I'm asking cos the prices and location seem to good to be true!

Once again,

THANK YOU!

Its fine, the only reasons the prices are down is because a lot of the people around there are of the lower middle class background. You will be fine, one of cousins came down from Bradford to study at City and hes been fine.
