ID'd for buying a soft drink?

So I went to a pub/restaurant with my friends today and we're all 18. We understood that they check for ID when buying alcohol although none of us were intending on doing so and all of us except one had no ID on us.
We ordered a meal and went to the bar to buy cokes and they asked for ID because apparently now you have to be 18 to buy a non alcoholic drink? Anyway, we got served because one of the waiters knew us...

I know there are different licences etc in pubs but i've never came across one that requires ID to buy non alcholic drinks :s-smilie:
Has anyone else experienced this?

quite often the license for the premises says that only 18+ are allowed in after a certain time 7 or 8 is the norm. So that would be the reason why I would imagine.
Its to stop older people buying younger people drinks and sneaking them away!

Nope because I don't feel safe being served by dumbasses.
I got asked for ID going into a pub the other day, and again at the bar which annoyed me (why ask twice?!). I wasn't even drinking either - I was buying the alcohol for a friend as the bar was so busy. Oh well, they are only doing their job I guess. It winds me up when you get asked for ID by someone who doesn't look as if he's even started shaving yet though!
I got ID'd for a coke in Spoons :-/
I'm 21
And I didn't have any ID on me
But then he let me buy the drink, as he realised what an idiot he was.
Yep, I got that last week, some pubs don't have the right licences to have under-age people on the premises after certain hours.

It's quite frustrating, they're particularly tight on it at the moment, what with it being school holidays and that, more underagers getting under bar-staff's feet. =/
Yes, my local Wetherspoons always asks for ID whether you are buying a soft drink or alcohol. It probably depends where you were, because I know Wetherspoons/Yates etc. have a policy were no under 18s can even go to the bar.

Some places have times when you have to be 18 to there full stop - like pub/restaurant that become just pubs at certain times..

Like the Wetherspoons chains...Its a pub restaurant that is inclusive at most times, except for friday and saturday night between 6 - 12 pm purely because that's when most people are in to hardcore drink..
the number of times i haven't made it into wetherspoons without even ordering a drink because of id'ing policies...me and my friend got into a place that ID'd we were so pleased with ourselves but then we got complacement and attempted to order appletizer...and thats where it all went wrong :p:

As above, this is a common Spoons policy. I am 21 and was ID'd there a couple of months ago buying breakfast food and a coffee (containing no alcohol!), at 10 o'clock in the morning.
That's nothing new - it's been the case in Wetherspoons that no under-18s are allowed in after 7pm since at least five years ago, when I worked for them.

Might be wrong, but I have a feeling that it's illegal for anyone under 18 to be in the 'bar area' (i.e. behind the bar and a couple of feet in front of it) at any time in any pub, though some places are a bit lax about it if you're buying a soft drink. Wetherspoons just take it that bit further and ban you from the whole premises.

I still remember the time a few friends and I were in sainsbury in the Alcohol section looking at the beer when a store worker came up to us and asked for ID. Obviously we were miffed as to why he'd even asked for it when we hadnt attempted to purchased anything..

Anyway, we couldnt be assed to argue so all handed over our Id (We were 19). The store worker turned around and said "You cant get anything here, you're not 21".

We know we're not 21, we're 19..
Well you need to be 21 to buy alcohol here
No we dont, it's 18 to buy alcohol
(Points to a challenge 21 sign) No, you need to be 21
Go get your manager

Manager comes over, looks at us, looks at our ID, then apologises for his staff member and wishes us a good evening.

I cannot stand staff in shops/bars who either do not know the law or are unnessesarily over-zealous.
I got kicked out for being under 18 and not with a 21 year old when my mates were eating in spoons and I just got out of work at about 6.

Thinking about it now I should have asked for the manager. She asked me for ID and I said I didn't have any, then I said, well, actualy I've got ID that says I'm 17 but she didn't say anything and told me to bugger off. I left anyway since there was a mate outside.

I think she thought I was like 15 since I was in my works uniform and it makes me look younger. Next time I'll tell em to bugger off since it wasn't past 7.
Maybe they thought you looked such a lightweight you'd hit the ceiling on pop?

Happened to me tonight, my friend and I got ID'd in the Royal when we were buying cokes. Apparantly after 7 you have to be ID'd? I thought it was after 9pm at least

in morrisons we were once asked lo leave the alcohol section for not having id, even though the people buying the drinks did have it, we just wanted to help choose.

Better avoid Tesco like the plague then. They wont serve anyone alcohol if they think anyone nearby is 'with' them who might be underaged.

Tesco need to actually read the law instead of interpreting it in their own way.
I got ID'd in Tescos. I was with my mum, who was buying a bottle of Jacques Cider. I bought nothing and I'm 23.
