Does doing a Law degree mean no Social Life?

In general the workload on your degree is a pretty good indication of the workload expected on the job. Medicine and Law (even Engineering) have pretty heavy workloads, and in general the jobs are the same; they're demanding for a reason. Think hard and decide carefully whether its right for you.

From my experience, barristers certainly seem to smile a lot more than solicitors (outside the courtroom, of course!) if that's any indication of the amount of work/stress they're under :p:

That is really encouraging for us future solicitors!!

Make yourself understand that this 'torture' will only take away a couple of years from your entire life. Once you have graduated and established yourself with a good job then you will have the chance to make up for all that lost social time and rebuild your social life. Indeed, if you work harder leaving less time for social life in those few years, you may end up having a 10 times better social life 5 years later which will continue for the rest of your life.QUOTE]

Or you could end up working 70 hours a week for a city law firm.

Success at university may widen your choice of work and increase how much you can earn but it rarely results in less work. IMHO

Don't let that put you off though.

So, on the whole, would you guys say yoor degree is a LOT HARDER, THE SAME, or EASIER than A-levels, in terms of the amount of time put in...how hard it is to understand and do the work. A lot of people tell me A-levels are actually the hardest thing you'll ever do.

If you can;t balance it with a social life then I don't think that you should be doing it.

Bingo!

Generally i hear this from ppl who go to universities or attend courses that are less demanding. Uni is supposed to be much harder than A levels, especially if its a top 10 uni-- you'll get hammered!

I think that depends on the individual. University (for law, at least) will almost certainly make you work and think much harder, but at the same time you're focusing more on just law, without the distractions of other subjects that you get at A-level...

I think you could be a little more helpful, Lauren :p: I don't think he was asking for anyone to tell him what he wants...

By comparing it to other degrees it would seem that the workload is greater, yes. But that said I know people doing their law degrees who have plenty of time to socialise. You just need to strike a good balance

I don't agree - the vast majority of us on here haven't even started a Law degree yet - and no one has said anything which Nina shouldn't have been able to work out for herself.

If you (I don't literally mean you) can't balance work and play amiably for three years then you shouldn't expect to do well in such a potentially demanding profession anyway.

Nina166
I dont think you can "you either want to do Law or you don't"; its not really as simple as that. I think most people take Law because they like the subject, but once they see the workload it all becomes a little less glamorous...unless you like the subject and you really like where its going. You never really know whether you want to do Law until you've really spent some time doing it...as with any other subject..and esp since most people will never have done the subject.

BTW, I dont really know whether I want to be a lawyer, I am not doing Law simply because of that. I just asked because I am exploring it as a career path.

And don't worry if you cant help darl, there are many others who are willing to

Honey, you either want to do Law, or you don't. Simple as. I'm not saying your views won't change during your degree - this will happen with whatever subject you take! You could do Britney Spears Studies and realise two months in that it's not for you. But before doing a degree you don't have this experience. You have to be committed to the subject and have a natural interest in it; you shouldn't let worries of hard work bother you if it is really what you want to do.

It is completely irrelevant whether or not you want to become a lawyer, a Law degree is, according to many, far detached from the realities of lawyerly life anyway.

Subtelty not your forte?

Lol no, not really. I'm a very 'speak your mind' kind of person - I just find this whole thread completely ridiculous. And the fact that I am having major men troubles right now doesn't help, maybe I'm not my usual helpful self lol.

There are plenty of people on here who are doing law degrees, and some who have even completed theirs. I also happen to know plenty of law undergads and graduates. From what they have said, and from what other university students I know have said, the general consensus seems to be that law students work harder than most others.

Maybe Nina wasn't as fortunate as me and hasn't had time to talk to law students at university...

Of course it's still subjective as to how much you need to work and how much of a social life you can fit in.

I agree entirely - I would have thought she could have gathered this from reading around on here and pure common sense though. Oh well, maybe I'm in a bad mood! x

I have heard a lot about Law being harder than most other subjects.... but thats it..I've just heard about it from other students, who have never studied law and have only heard it themselves. And yes, I am more unfortunate than you Onearmedbandit because I really haven't had the chance to talk upfront with law students without it being a presentation or a talk or somethin like that. The thing is I know there are a lot of Law students here and I just wanted to ask YOU. Lauren, its not really pure common sense if you think about it... how students feel about their law degrees is a very subjective thing, and I knew that when I asked. But getting an overrall picture would be helpful.

Lauren, I'd advice you to spend some time alone, because you obviously have man troubles(as you said) and I wouldn't want you taking out your problems on someone else :p: Maybe you've spent too long in University and forgotten how it feels like when your just about to embark on something you've NEVER done before. You do end up asking quite silly questions, (as mine may have seemed to you "pro's in the field"), but in the end you are looking for certain answers and have to shape your question to suit that!

Funnily enough, I am alone right now, very alone. Thanks for reminding me of that!

Actually I'm not at Uni - and I am just about to embark on something I've never done before - a Law degree!

I'll let you know about the workload and social life when I've got personal experience of it, until then I would say that I'm sure there are degrees with lesser workloads than Law, but personally I wouldn't be interested in doing anything else.

Good luck x

Dont worry about it... I'll remind you again if I see you taking out your troubles on others...its not very healthy you know, and with your attitude I have to say I am not surprised that you're alone.

I'm glad that you know exactly what to expect, I guess I am a little less certain than you are...but thats only because, like most other teenagers, I dont really know EXACTLY what I want, and getting some advice helps. I hope your assurance gets you where you want to be..and I am sure that my trepidation and exploration will help me to do the same!

Now that really is out of order... how dare you make judgments about me like that?! I happen to have had my world turned upside down by the first guy I've ever loved these past few days, so I think I'm entitled to be 'assured', as you put it.

Please don't make personal judgments like that - I'm already feeling like sh*t as it is.

Reply 36

Ok calm down. I'm sure Nina didn't really mean that. Anyway if it's any consolation, my life isn't a bed of roses either. You are not alone Lauren...there's just so many of us who's life is not the way they want it to be, you can't possibly think you are alone.

I didnt mean to hurt your feelings..or did I? Look, dont expect to be patronising people here and not get anything back in return. I am sorry that you are feeling like that, but I just didn't like the tone of what you were saying..it sounded all too "superior than thou". I guess now I understand where you were coming from, and I hope things turn out better for you soon.

I don't see myself as superior to anyone, I really don't. Anyway, maybe I was harsh, maybe I wasn't. Fact is that you took things too far.

Anyway good luck with your degree, whatever you decide to do.

DITTO. Actually I've been crying all day..for the smallest, silliest things..I dont even know how to explain it! So, maybe thats why I got a little rude...and it helps to know that I am not the ONLY person in the world whose feeling like this.
