Open wounds....what to do

I have wounds, blisters and cuts on my hands which I originally got from rowing and were very painful at the time. Now I have a problem, as I am playing other sports which have caused the wounds to reopen. Every time the cuts scab over, the scabs are broken when I catch a ball/fall on the floor.
I have tried covering the sores with surgical tape but it just comes off all the time, and I'm scared my hands are going to get infected.

Anyone got any ideas?

Compeed blister plasters are very good as long as they don't get wet, when they become like infinitely stretchy and sticky bits of chewing gum

Could mummify your hands.

once u get used to the pain it goes away.

oh i know you should wear a pair of gloves

Reply 6

That won't really protect against the impact though.

Yeh, he'll be able to catch the ball wearing those
make sure u use some salvon or somethin as an antiseptic to stop infection also use boiling water (cooled down of course) and salt mixed to prevent infection too.... xoxo

Stop playing sports till your hands heal up??

that is good advice.

but you probably won't take it  i'm lucky cos i don't get huge blisters rowing, just calluses.
if the wounds aren't deep, try germolene new skin. it stings, but its quite good, and it has a nice, antisepticy smell.

you know really that you need to let them dry up on their own, but if you must, you could always try wearing training gloves, seeing as the cuts will be at the base of your fingers. after whatever sport it is you do, make sure you wash your hands in dilute antiseptic and put some antiseptic cream on or something so they don't get infected.

compede's new germoline-esque stuff is relatively new I think.

But I honestly think a time-out is best for your hands - you'll scar and stuff if you keep foiling the healing process.

I just don't understand people who are addicted to sports

I go climbing once a week (in school-time) and sometimes get blisters and my hands end up pretty sore, so I let them heal before doing anything else. Not that I do do anything else... if I did I'd go swimming though, two different sports stressful on the hands would be too much!

Surgical tape? I didn't think you were supposed to use that on skin, I thought it was used for bandages and things... perhaps you're getting mixed up with wound closure strips? That's an idea actually, nurses use them, and you can easily buy them for yourself, but don't ask me how to use them because I never have and don't have a clue!

Get some stuff to wrap around your hands. I used to get really bad hands from rowing but it hasn't been a problem since I started 'bandaging' them up. I can't remember the name of the stuff that I used but I'll post it later on.

Load of good suggestions. I was thinking of taking up rowing next year... beginning to reconsider now though.

Maybe just wrap your hands up in a bandage beneath the fingers and wait until it heals?
