Hi one of my best friends has one very crooked tooth, which has caused slight crowding in one of his front two teeth...it doesn't look bad at all but hes very self concious and wants a dazzling smile

however the problem only got to the way it is 2 years ago and in thinking about it hes just under 18 and so can still have them on the NHS if he hurries and decides...hes very mixed up about getting braces before his first university year....i've told him hel still make friends and stuff but he disagrees...hes starting to get obsessed about it now...and i wish i had answers to his doubts cos hes a very good friend
so i just wanted to know what you all think about it...would you have it done? and what would you think of someone who has braces at university?
thanks

i'm 17, and i had braces just 6 months ago...
at my college, people don't really care about wether or not you're wearing braces or not...
they know you'll have 'em off eventually...
your mate shouldn't be put off making new friends because of them...

what were you saying about veneers?i dont know what they are.

is it possible to just get the tooth taken out that hides behind two at the side and get something else put there? because that would be better and i doubt his teeth would need to be straightened then.

cos its just mainly that one tooth thats the bother

veneers are just like little 'covers' for your teeth if u have one or 2 crooked....they mask the crookedness and give the illusion of straight teeth this would be a good option for him however if he smokes it can discolour them likewise if he wore braces.... he should talk it over with is orthodontist or his dentist to see if this is an option for him... xoxo

thats a lot of work...and being the shy one he says he admires you being able to go through all that without all the doubts.

oh believe me the doubts were there....but i just trust my orthadontist to sort them out adventually... the best thing is to have support from ur friends.....i too didnt wanna go though with a brace...but its either that.....or teeth which are going to annoy u for life!

i mean my teeth look their worst at the moment, but im having two taken out in a few weeks, only then will they start to look normal!

can you have teeth removed and have fake ones put in? is it very very expensive

tammy do you think a veneer could be put on that tooth shown on the pic above?

my mate had a dead tooth and had a sorta tooth cover put on it by the dentist and that didnt cost her anything (but i think she was under 18 then)

i dont know about fake ones
My orthodontic treatment has been very long winded process so he should just be greatful that he hasn't had to go through the pain, of real orthodontic treatment instead of just braces. (Not too criticise anyone who only had braces, I know how painful they are)

He should just get it done and be pleased with the result.

right, well if he had a cover put on the tooth hidden behind(if thats possible), then unless you looked very very closely his top set would look straight...even though very close up one of the front two is a little crooked

yeah a veneer could be put on the tooth but the dentist/orthodontist shall trim back about 5-7 mm of enamel of the tooth for the veneer to be placed on... and veneers can last up to 10 years with good hygiene

having teeth removed and a fake one put in is actually quite painful and expensive... as they have to implant little metal screws into the jawline so they can screw the tooth into place xoxo

i recon that MIGHT work, but i dont think it would be a long term solution. i still think its best to go for braces and get it fixed once and for all.

thanks..and yeah that does sound painful.

but would the veneer mean his tooth is like extral big because it is hidden a large part of it is at the back as shown (and sorry if this is a little closer than you expected or wanted to see)

no it wouldnt because his tooth shall be shaped and made smaller for the veneer to be placed upon xoxo

i really cant say anymore....im all out!

tell ur mate that braces are the answer and theres no point looking for short term solutions because the problem will always come back....

i promise u its the best choice, yeh they may be annoying and not look particulary nice but its all for a good cause. try not to be neg about it. get UV ones! or glow in the dark ones! lol

lol i'm going to be having braces when i go to uni :p: I wouldn't worry about it. it's not like you're going to have them for the rest of your life. Think of the long term gains  A dazzling smile!

LOL yeah it seems maybe it will be the best solution because once it is done its finished for life then.

however its a bit weird having a tooth taken out that is straight just to balance another one out,a dn annoying that only a small problem like one misaligned tooth will take two years to correct
