Bencraft halls is not a bad hall at all. Its very standard accomodation for students. It about a 15 minute walk from the main uni campus (or short bus ride). as with all the other halls you have to get a bus to find a large supermarket, although there are some small shops not to far away.

The only downsie is its not as big as glen eyre or monte, and although there is a large social comitte the range of activites is not a wide. The walk back also takes you through some rather dodgy looking woods, which can be a bit unnerving on your own.

If that is the only offer make sure you accept it. Its much better to be in bencraft than in private rented.

hope this helps a bit

To address the "downside"; the fact that Bencraft is smaller is not a bad thing at all. You will get to know a lot of people and see them more than once. From talking to people in larger halls (I was there last year) they often said that they didn't seem to know that many people as although there are more of them, people don't make as much effort to speak to people as there is a good chance you won't see them again for another few months. The size really isn't an issue at all. Just remember to make as much as an effort in the first few weeks as possible with other people that live there. I'm part of the JCR which is a group made up of Bencrafters from last year that have organized 2 weeks of events to give you the chance to do this as well so take full advantage of this! Also, if you have facebook, we've set up an Official Bencraft group called 'Bencraft Freshers 2009-2010' so if you get the chance join that before so when you get there you can already know some people or if you have any questions you'll hopefully get a much faster response!
I lived there 2004/05 and enjoyed it

Hi yeah im currently staying in bencraft court writing from block B

it is AWESOME
I initially applied for glen eyre which is the biggest and, on paper, the best halls. but it is massive and from what i hear people are a bit more 'clicky' like because its so big flats group together. But here we are 250 odd strong and we are much more united i reckon
if i were to apply all over again i would definitely choose bencraft
at first i thought it was really far away but the buses go every half an hour and you get a free buspass also highfield campus (main one) is only a 15 minute walk away so dont worry about that

Bencraft has a really good vibe withvery friendly people we all go out together as one unified awesome pack and whilst we might not have the best common room or have a gym like glen eyre but we are very friendly the rooms are good quality its has a much better atmosphere than the other halls i think. but then again i am bias

if you have any questions about it just give me a shout and ill be happy to answer

cheers
Dan

hey dan,
I know who you are :p:

This'll come up again soon once people begin to get their halls.
Bencraft has something that the other halls lack; "It may be a hole, but it's our hole"

Hey, I don't know really what to expect but I'll be round the corner from you in Bencraft C  , I think it's gonna be great though

Also got an offer from Bencraft B, likewise don't really know what to expect, but I'll accept it anyway. Still though, if anyone there currently wants to tell us what it's like nowadays, that'd be nice.

I've got no idea, personally. But, I wasn't sure if any of you had seen the general residences Facebook page? Just search 'University of Southampton Residences' It has a few pictures on there. Or, maybe message the Bencraft JCR?

I just got an offer for Bencraft (B). I'll be going to Avenue Campus though, which is quite far away. Is there anything I can do, or is this not a problem?

From what I've heard, I don't think that will be much of an issue. Everything is connected by the bus service, after all. I suppose if you find its an issue once you've moved in, you could always request a transfer?

You should be fine, the U2 bus service goes from Bencraft to Avenue.
I'll be in Bencraft A, however I'll be a second year having previously stayed in Glen Eyre, so if you've got any questions, feel free to ask.

Thank you both very much! I've accepted my offer there now.
Rather coincidentally, I've now heard from accommodation and have been offered Bencraft C!

Haha, you're not alone. There are only going to be just over 200 of us Bencrafters... It makes sense that there aren't as many of us on TSR compared to larger halls like Glen Eyre.

Haha yeah, we are tiny in comparison, have you bought any freshers tickets? Would be easier to go with people from same hall
