Before you lecture me, I know college choice doesn't affect my chance of getting in, but if a college is over-subscribed i'm more likely to be pooled and therefore more likely to go to a not-so-nice college that nobody likes, right?

Thank you =] x

OK, speaking very generally here, but the suposedly "not-so-nice college that nobody likes" is probably likely to be the least overly subscribed, so if you want to apply to one that is less over-subscribed then you might in all likelihood end up applying to one of the colleges that you seemingly want to avoid. :dontknow:

Haha, you have a point

But I guess if I just avoid the reeeally over-subscribed ones, I could apply to a nice one that isn't at the bottom of the barrel, as it were, so somewhere in the middle?

For individual subjects it is very random. Magdalen, Balliol, Merton etc. will most likely be towards the more competitive end.

Below are the average number of applicants per place for maths; I think the period was 2003-2006. They're [likelihood between 'probably' and 'almost certainly'] not a reliable indicator of which the most oversubscribed colleges are, but there aren't any other figures available, really.

List
Balliol 2.6
Brasenose 2.8
Christ Church 2.2
Corpus Christi 2.3
Exeter 2.7
Hertford 2.1
Jesus 3.1
Keble 3.3
LMH 2.5
Lincoln 2.1
Magdalen 4.0
Mansfield 1.5
Merton 3.0
New College 2.7
Oriel 2.7
Pembroke 1.9
Queen's 2.7
St Anne's 2.3
St Catherine's 2.2
Teddy Hall 2.1
St Hilda's 1.4
St Hugh's 2.5
St John's 3.5
St Peter's 1.8
Somerville 2.3
Trinity 4.3
University 2.6
Wadham 2.9
Worcester 3.0
Oxford Average 2.6
It seems (he says, relying on his not-so-great knowledge of the geography of Oxford colleges) that the most oversubscribed colleges are those nearer the maths institute, as well as Merton, Magdalen and Worcester (which I hear has very good tutors ). Oh, and Trinity — maybe a lot of applicants got confused when they had to choose between Oxford and Cambridge.

Haha - to think that Merton is oversubscribed. I still have absolutely no idea how I got in! Though, the tutors are great

Aaaaah. No pressure on my year to do well, then... We wouldn't want the Warden to leave unhappy, would we?! I think I'll be one of the contributing factors to a drop in place next year!

The average applicantlace is about 5 these days for maths.

Partly the difference is due to a growth in the number of applicants since those out-of-date figures. Secondly those figures never included open applications, which are not an insignificant number, and one reason why publishing those figures was never that helpful.

Further the open applications and the second-choice interviews are allocated so as to level the seeming differences in competition.

I still dont think you are increasing your chances if you apply to an less subscribed college. If you are good enough you will get a place, if you arent you wont.

And in any case those figures are quite out of date now.
