blood!

there's a thread below about donation, but I thought I'd add this in a new thread...

A friend persuaded me to go and give blood today, and although I was a little bit apprehensive it turned out to be fine

I've been meaning to for a while, because I've felt I should as I can, but just never got round to it till my friend asked me to come with her. So..

please have a look at this --> blood

and here's some examples of the ways you can change someone's life

and please go and donate if you can!! (you get free biscuits afterwards too!)

I agree. I gave for the first time a month ago, even though i was completely freaked out about blood and fainting i got through it and i may have helped someone now. It's disgraceful the amount of people in this country who can give blood but don't. Grrr. xx

and tea!!...its actually pretty awesome giving blood...we get free sandwiches too
Yes i donated nearly 18 months ago, around Xmas break from Uni, and i fainted after it had all been done. I wasn't offered any sugary stuff after giving blood, and thats why - very bad mishandling and professionalism to be honest. It should have been offered to me, but fainting, sitting down thankfully, then gaining consciousness, and then throwing up all over myself and the floor - not one of my favourite experiences...felt pretty let down by it all - there i was giving pints of my own blood, and at the time, i didn't know the procedure, i wasn't told how i may feel after giving blood, they should have been on standby with something sugary. Bit of malpractice to be honest, i'm not considering going back for another 4 or 5 years now...experience shook me a bit, also wait for my body to develop and get stronger, but not to have given me stuff to have after it, them knowing it was my first time of donating blood....well...

You should ahve eaten before hand. Did they not give you a booklet to read through? And weren't there biscuits and crisps to help yourself too? It sounds really odd to me. I'm sorry you went through all that. No wonder you're put off. I know it was horrible for you but you really should give it another try. What you went through is not normally the case and people really need the blood. xx

I got a letter in the post - then went on the website, & mailed them to ask if I could give blood, although I had a sickle cell trait. They haven't replied yet!

I don't think I'd ever be able to. It's not that I don't like helping people, it's just (apart from practical reasons such as not weighing enough) the idea that it will probably go to someone who might not even deserve it makes me uncomfortable.

Maybe I'm using that as a poor justification for my fear of it though!

Thats the stupidest arguement i've ever heard
I'm shocked and disapointed
Who exactly does deserve your blood?

A very poor justification. The people that need blood are those in hospitals undergoing serious operations, or people involved in car accidents etc. What exactly are your criteria for who gets to live and who gets to die?

Well, I don't know, but there are many people who just don't take care of it. If someone was out joyriding and has an accident and needs blood, they should clearly not get some from someone who's been taking care of theirs.

Admittedly I haven't thought about it much and am probably wrong. I never claimed to be so altruistic though!

yes you're wrong retract your statement.

what if you have an accident and it was your fault, and you need an operation and blood.....you've not taken proper care of your blood by crashing do you deserve it

It's a personal decision that I don't think people should get angry about.

If it was my fault, tough, I shouldn't take it from someone who's been careful enough not to have an accident.

So when a woman is giving birth and she needs blood she can't have any because she's not good enough, or when someone who was born with a disease which means they need regualr transfusions they don't deserve it for being born like that? Or when someone is innocently stabbed defending someone they don't get any blood because they don't deserve it!
I really hope you never need any blood - god forbid - you might not deserve it!

It's not like there's a shortage and we need to prioritise - and if we did it wouldn't be one a moral basis. If someone is in need, they get my blood.
