Moving into your first student flat

  • Moving into your first student flat

Congratulations! You have been offered a place at university and are now set to move into your first student flat. It’s natural to feel slightly nervous but there’s no reason to be scared, especially if you take advice from experienced professionals as you will be fine!

The Three Steps to Take

Below are the top three things to consider when moving into your first student flat.

1 - Check for damage

When you move into your student flat, it is important to check that there is no existing damage. If there is pre-existing damage, which is clearly not your fault, you must document this carefully, ideally with pictures and/or videos of the damage as well as getting it recorded in your contract. Otherwise there is a likelihood you will end up footing the bill for this damage when it is time for you to move out, as the landlord will want you to pay for the repairs – and without proof that it wasn’t caused by you there is little room for negotiation.

2 - Electricity, heating, water services and council taxes may need to be transferred to your name when you move into your student flat. Check who is responsible for these bills early on to avoid any nasty surprises down the line. If you are responsible for these bills and you have not budgeted for them you could be in for a shock a few months after you have moved in and nobody wants that!

3 - Have all the necessities packed up and ready to go!

If you’ve spent your whole life living at home or travelling or in shared accommodation, up until now, you will not be prepared for all the things you need in your new flat. For example, cooking utensils such as pots and pans will probably be needed when you move into your student flat, as well as bedding and toiletries. It is a good idea to double check exactly what is included, even if you are moving into a furnished flat, so you’re not cold at night without a duvet or hungry come dinnertime!
