Entry requirements for pre-dental courses

Bristol - Gateway to Dentistry:

  • Places available: unknown
  • Typical offer: BBC including B in Biology or Chemistry 
  • GCSE requirements: 4 in English and Maths 
  • Graduate applicants: not accepted 
  • Admissions test: UCAT
  • Resits: Yes - one resit for each subject allowed. Must be enrolled at eligible school/ college during academic year of retake.
  • Transfers: not allowed. 

*Deferred entry is not accepted. 

Bristol - Gateway to Dentistry [Alternative Requirements]:

  • IB: 29 overall including 5 at HL Biology or Chemistry. Those predicted or achieved 33 points or higher including 16 at HL or 6 at HL Chemistry are not eligible for this course. 
  • Cambridge Pre-U: same as A Level requirement (BBC) where B = M1/2 and C = M3
  • Scottish Highers: BB including Biology or Chemistry at Advanced Higher with Standard Higher at BBBBC. Those with achieved or predicted Advanced Highers of AA in or Chemistry at grade A are not eligible for this course. 
  • Welsh Baccalaureate: Requirements are as for A-levels, where you can substitute a non-subject specific grade for the Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate at that grade.
  • Access HE: not accepted
  • BTEC: DMM in applied sciences, medical sciences or Health and Social care. Those who have chemistry A Level are not eligible for this course. 

Cardiff Foundation Course:

Available for students who don't have A Levels in Biology and Chemistry. 

Other entry requirements are similar to their standard course requirements.

Cardiff Foundation Course [Alternative requirements]:

  • IB: 36 overall or 666 in 3 HL subject with a maximum of only 1 HL subject (chemistry or biology).
  • Scottish Highers: AAAAA including English language and mathematics and AAAAA at higher levels including 2 sciences (biology, chemistry or physics)
  • Welsh baccalaureate: will be accepted in lieu of one A Level (AAA), excluding any specified subjects.
  • Access HE: 60 creds with a minimum of 45 at level 3 to include a minimum of 30 distinctions and 15 merits. Acceptable subjects: dentistry, medicine, pharmacy and science (to include chemistry and biology)
  • BTEC: DDD in extended BTEC Applied Science or Medical Laboratory science.

*Resits: Cardiff will save a place to allow applicants to resit if they have missed their grades and FIRMED Cardiff. Otherwise, resits are not accepted.

Dundee - Gateway to Dentistry:

  • Places available: unknown
  • Typical offer: AAB for widening access (those with extenuating circumstances) OR AAA for those with the wrong subjects 
  • A Level subjects: chemistry and one other science (widening access) OR max 1 science subject excluding chem and bio (for wrong subject applicants) 
  • GCSE requirements: achievement at GCSEs considered but no details specified otherwise 
  • Graduate requirements: not accepted 
  • Admissions test: UCAT
  • Resits: not allowed

King's College London (KCL) - Enhanced Support Dentistry Programme (ESDP):

Only those who have attended a non-selective state school in Greater London since the age of 11 and have done their GCSEs or A Levels in this type of school are eligible to apply
Typical offer: BBB-AAA
Graduate requirements: Not accepted

KCL ESDP [Alternative Requirements]:

  • IB: 32-35 points including 555-666 in 3 Higher level subjects including HL Biology or Chemistry, with an additional science (chemistry, biology, maths, physics or psychology).
  • Cambridge Pre-U: D3 D3 D3
  • Access to Medicine/ Dentistry HE Diploma: 36 level 3 credits at distinction with remaining 9 credits at merit.
  • Scottish Highers and advanced highers: AAB at higher in 1 sitting and AA at advanced higher.
  • BTEC: TBC

King's College London (KCL) - ESDP [Alternative Requirements]:

  • IB: 32-35 points including 555-666 in 3 Higher level subjects including HL Biology or Chemistry, with an additional science (chemistry, biology, maths, physics or psychology).
  • Cambridge Pre-U: D3 D3 D3
  • Scottish Highers and Advanced Highers: AAB at higher in 1 sitting and AA at advanced higher.
  • Access to Medicine/ Dentistry HE Diploma: 36 level 3 credits at distinction with remaining 9 credits at merit.

Manchester Foundation Course:

Available for students who don't have A Levels in Biology and Chemistry. 

Other entry requirements are similar to their standard course requirements.

Manchester Foundation [Alternative Requirements]:

  • IB: 36 points overall with 666 at HL. Both maths options are accepted. Subject combinations at HL must not be suitable for standard admission.
  • Cambridge Pre-U: the same subject specifications as A Level apply.
  • Scottish Highers: AAAA National 5 in the first sitting. AA in advanced highers. The following combinations are accepted: 3 Advanced Highers at AAA OR  2 Advanced Highers at grades AA, plus one A2-level subject at grade A OR 2 Advanced Highers at grades AA, plus one new Higher at grade A. Chemistry and Biology in advanced highers are not accepted.
  • Welsh Baccalaureate: 2 A Levels are required alongside the welsh baccalaureate where minimum grade required will usually be the same as the lowest grade listed for A Level requirements.
  • Access to HE: not accepted

*A Level resits accepted if a minimum of grade B has been achieved for each subject, only 1 attempt allowed. Must achieve A*AA.

**GCSE resits are accepted.

***Reapplicants can only apply once more to Manchester.
