Your required reading...
Studying law is a big yet noble undertaking, though not one that you ever need to take on alone. While on your course, you'll make a whole host of law school friends but occasionally, getting some advice from someone who has been through the process before you is the most valuable thing around.
With that in mind, we've gathered up some recommendations for the best law blogs for law students, covering everything from current students charting their adventures to experienced law degree holders writing up some of their most memorable stories. Let's take a look at a few of them now.
As the title suggests, this blog highlights the journey of a London law student - Lorraine, specifically. Lorraine is an LLB graduate who currently works at a startup as a compliance analyst. Starting her blog while attending university, the entire blog chronicles her experience going through law school, with an aim of helping current or future law students know what to expect.
Life of a London Blog Student is a relatable, accessible and genuinely valuable blog to read through for any law student and can be considered essential reading.
Launched in 2013, BarristerBlogger is run by Matthew Scott, an experienced criminal barrister with London's Pump Court Chambers. Scott has been in the job for over 25 years and tends to post multiple times a month, offering substantial commentary on recent cases in the news.
Scott's also written book reviews for a variety of legally-inclined books and won 2015's Comment Award for Best Independent Blog. All in all, the BarristerBlogger is an absolute must-read for law students.
Henry Brooke - Musings, Memories and Miscellanea
Sir Henry Brooke started his blog - Musings, Memories and Miscellanea - with an aim to "humanise the law" and explain a variety of complex issues in a more straightforward, simple way. A retired Court of Appeal judge, Brooke launched the blog in 2015 to chart his thoughts and memories over the course of his career.
As you can imagine, there's a wealth of information here and much knowledge to be gained from Sir Henry Brooke's experiences, offering wisdom in a wide range of topics from legal history, diversity, mediation and access to justice, among others.
Arguably one of the most notable examples on our list, The Secret Barrister is a widely known, anonymous blog from a criminal barrister featuring entertaining and engaging posts focused on recent news and events.
Providing some real-time knowledge and views on the current criminal justice system, aiming to correct inaccuracies found in the reporting of crimes, The Secret Barrister is an enlightening read at any time. The Secret Barrister's posts even became an award-winning book entitled Stories of the Law and How It's Broken.
Lucy Reed is the mastermind of Pink Tape, a blog chronicling her time as a barrister specialising in family law at Bristol's St John's Chambers. Reed is also co-founder of the Transparency Project.
Her tone is friendly, approachable and chatty - unafraid to go on the occasional rant for the sake of good content. Reed presents the family court system in a very real, down to earth way, debunking myths and misinformation found in a host of media reports. Absolutely a blog not to miss.
While Cerebellum Chef is based in the United States, a lot of the advice, observations and opinions are still relevant to UK-based law students. This blog looks over the course of one student's journey through law school, with the occasional side journey into the world of food for good measure.
The author shares her favourite recipes and food hacks, ideal for the hard-working law student coming back to dorms after a long study session. This blog hosts posts such as "10 things you need to succeed in law school" and "6 things you must do before law school", among many others. Once again, let's not forget the recipes and food articles, some of them look delicious.
With these recommendations, hopefully, you will be able to find a law-based blog that works for you and can offer some sage advice to help you along with your own law school journey, or even just to offer up a nice break for your late-night studying.
