Teaching Excellence Framework Silver Award

The Teaching Excellence Framework is a government-run exercise to evaluate the quality of the undergraduate student experience in higher education institutions. Participation by universities, colleges and private providers is optional, and the consequences differ by nation of the UK as the funding and regulatory systems differ. The formal guidance on TEF can be found on HEFCE’s website.

While policies to promote excellence in teaching have a long history in UK higher education, TEF’s origin is in the Conservative government’s manifesto for the 2015 General Election, written by the now Universities and Science Minister Jo Johnson. In the Cameron, then May, government higher education policies were developed through a Green Paper (2015) White Paper (2016) and the Higher Education and Research Act (2017)

The Government has introduced the TEF as a way of:
- Better informing students’ choices about what and where to study
- Raising esteem for teaching
- Recognising and rewarding excellent teaching
- Better meeting the needs of employers, business, industry and the professions

Since 2017 we have also been able to offer you halls of residence. This is in partnership with Lulworth Student Company, who run Hurn House and Union House, located in central Bournemouth. These modern, luxury halls are two miles away from the college, serviced by a directed 15-minute bus route to our campus, and very close to all that Bournemouth has to offer: great bars, shops and the beach. There are 70 rooms within this facility for AECC University College students, all en-suite flats with shared kitchen facilities. Rent is £135 per week over a 42-week tenancy. This price covers bills, internet access and security.

More than a location, it's a way of life

We are located two miles to the east of Bournemouth town centre (10 minute drive or 1hr coastal walk). Buses run regularly from outside the college to Bournemouth and the New Forest. AECC University College is also close to Pokesdown train station which has direct route to Bournemouth train station (4 minute journey).

Once in Bournemouth, the South West train network has good links to cities with airports and harbours including: Southampton (40 minutes) and Portsmouth (1.5hrs). Bournemouth is well connected to the UK motorway network too, allowing you to explore beautiful coastlines that surround you.

Along with there being several amenities on campus, there are numerous bars, restaurants, retail and food shops in nearby towns of Southbourne and Boscombe each one being a 10-minute walk away from the University College.
