Campus

The Curve, Teesside University

Located in the centre of town, everything you need is on your doorstep at Teesside University. Recent investment in our campus includes a fully pedestrianised campus heart – a lovely, flexible, outdoor space popular with students for relaxing, and great for community markets and events.

Within the campus heart is our new, five-storey, £22m teaching building with a 200 seat lecture theatre and modern learning spaces – it’s called The Curve, it’s big and gold (coloured…not plated!) and it’s the first building you’ll see when you first arrive on campus.

The University’s library has recently been refurbished, it now offers great views across campus through a new glass frontage. It also features colourful, comfortable learning spaces with lots of PCs, resources and study space to help you get the best out of your study time.

Recent investment also includes enhanced science and engineering facilities (have a look here) and a new, £2.75m health and fitness centre (check that out here).

At Teesside we’re proud of our subject-specific facilities and know that good quality equipment helps you learn and gain practical skills. Facilities include a flight-simulation laboratory; an environmental chamber; broadcast news studios; a green screen; simulated practice labs for health subjects; a full-size ambulance; wood, metal, plastic, resin and glass workshops; video production studios; 3D printers; lie detector equipment; a crime scene house; and a hydrotherapy pool.

Where is Teesside?

map

Teesside University is in the centre of Middlesbrough, in North East England.

Our campus is easily accessible by car or train and is only a ten minute walk from Middlesbrough railway station. Durham Tees Valley Airport is 13 miles away.

With excellent rail links it's easy to travel to Middlesbrough from the rest of the UK. Local train services and a frequent bus service also make it easy for you to explore the lovely towns, villages, coast and countryside around the region.

Visit our travel page for more details.

Our area

Colourful beach huts

Middlesbrough is one of the best value places to live in the UK and your money will go much further here than in lots of other university towns and cities. Just a few minutes’ walk from campus you’ll find quirky cafes, chilled out micro pubs, vintage clothes shops and an emerging collection of independent bars and retailers. The usual high street shops, museums, sports, restaurants, cinemas, clubs and parks are also close to hand.

Soak up some culture

There’s always something happening in the Boro – whether you’re up for a couple of craft beers at a local gig or a relaxing afternoon strolling around the modern art gallery, mima. There’s also a rock café, seasonal festivals, and some great theatre venues offering drama, live music, comedy and classical performances. Teesside's own Students' Union is a hive of activity - it's won an incredible 13 Best Bar None awards and offers massive club and theme nights, live comedy, live music and live appearances from huge celeb names.

Eat, drink, chill

Independent cafes, artisan and vegan-friendly bakeries, delicious cocktail bars, stylish charcuteries, cosy vintage teashops, locally sourced produce and a dry bar are all just around the corner from campus. You’ll also find plenty of international restaurants offering up flavours from around the globe. If you need a quick snack during the day you'll find the Students' Union shop stocked with treats - you can get lovely hot food and sarnies for lunch too. And check out The Smeltery, located inside Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art – incredible, homely food packed with goodness, freshly squeezed juices, local gin and excellent coffee – tuck in and check out the art and shop when you’re there.

Coast, countryside and the great outdoors

Teesside is an amazing place if you love being outside. Whether you want a lazy day in the country, a stroll along the beach or an adventure on one of the largest expanses of moorland in the UK – it’s all on your doorstep as a Teesside student.

Middlesbrough is a gateway to top surf, pretty coastal towns, wild expanses of moorland and the amazing Cleveland Way. Think ice cream, paddling in the sea, fish and chips, BBQs on the beach, wellies and pub lunches. If you like adventure, check out the Tees Barrage and enjoy some white water rafting on the River Tees (look out for friendly seals).

There’s so much to do as a student in Middlesbrough and the Tees Valley and we hope you enjoy reading about the area in this guide.

Students’ Union

Three students sit in Teesside Univesity's Students' Union LOVE IT lounge

As well as the great mix of places and activities around the Tees Valley, Teesside University’s Students’ Union is a big part of student life at Teesside - and it's right on your doorstep.

The SU is a hive of activity, events and fun. It’s led by students for students and it’s twice been awarded NUS' Students' Union of the Year and achieved gold for the third time in the 2016 Best Bar None awards (we’re really happy about this!). The Union is also ranked in the top three in the world by international students (International Student Barometer Autumn 2015).

It offers places to eat and drink, support, advice, social spaces, and a shop. It also provides a fantastic range of sports clubs and special interest societies including archery, futsal, climbing and cheerleading, as well as music, LGBT, airsoft, literature, Dr Who and battle re-enactment. There's also a job service to help you find part-time work.

Oh and the SU also puts on an incredible end of year party called Final Fling! Don’t miss it. 2017’s event featured a fairground in the centre of campus and an appearance from S Club Party and Wheatus.
