Living Here

London

London is the epitome of a world city. In recent years, major studies have revealed it to be the most desirable place on earth to work, the UK’s favourite city, the ‘capital of Europe’ and the world’s most popular tourist destination.

While Wembley is situated in the north-west of London, convenient access to the Underground’s Metropolitan Line means that central attractions and amenities can be reached in just 20 minutes by train. With this in mind, it’s easy to see why so many students choose to enrol at UCFB Wembley.

Central London is certainly easy to reach by tube, but that’s not to say our students don’t have access to a wide range of amenities and facilities right on their doorsteps. London Designer Outlet – part of the wider Wembley Park Retail project – was opened fully in 2013 and is situated adjacent to the stadium itself. Built at a cost of £100 million, it is home to around 70 designer outlet stores, 15 restaurants and a nine-screen cinema. The UCFB Wembley campus is also surrounded by a range of faith centres, meaning worship support is always on hand. UCFB Wembley’s main halls of residence, Victoria Halls, are just a ten-minute walk away too.

London is represented by a number of professional football teams. Closest to Wembley are Queens Park Rangers (QPR), who play just six miles away at Loftus Road. Also in close proximity are Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace – so there’s plenty of choice for sports fans who might be after a new club or tranche of away trips.

The residents of London also have the chance to enjoy a cheaper day at the match by supporting one of the teams a little further down the English league structure, such as Brentford, AFC Wimbledon or Dagenham & Redbridge.

While there is clearly a lot of love for the beautiful game in London, the city’s sporting heritage doesn’t start and end with football. Cricket, rugby union, rugby league and tennis are all represented well by established teams and world-class venues – not to mention the hugely successful summer Olympics in 2012.

Manchester

Sport is an important part of Manchester’s culture, the hosts of the 2002 Commonwealth Games and the 2003 UEFA Champions League Final. The city is synonymous with footballing success and is home to two of the Premier League giants, Manchester City and Manchester United. Aside from football, there are large followings for rugby league, rugby union, ice hockey, cricket, cycling and netball, with UCFB’s partners Manchester Thunder coached by England’s Tracey Neville.

Manchester has produced world-famous artists such as Oasis, the Smiths, the Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, Joy Division and Jamiroquai and as such will be eternally associated with music culture. All of the world’s biggest singers and bands tour Manchester and there is a plethora of music venues to attend ranging from Manchester Arena, Manchester Apollo and Manchester Academy to hundreds of smaller indie venues. In addition to the music scene, Manchester hosts a number of annual festivals and houses museums, art galleries and shopping centres, such as the Arndale and the Trafford Centre, to rival any major global city.

Largely recognised as England’s second city in polls, Manchester is a truly cosmopolitan city with a thriving student population. Living in Manchester is a unique experience for all students as the modern and comfortable city caters for all tastes and is designed for the optimal student experience.
