The best open days, as rated by you

You can flip through hundreds of prospectuses, but there's nothing like an open day to help you understand what it will be like at your chosen university.

So what unis do open days best? And what's so good about them? To find out, we surveyed thousands of year 12 and 13 students and asked them to rate their open day experiences.

Cambridge takes first place

Cambridge nabbed the number one spot for best university open day, with a mighty 93% of would-be students voting their overall experience either excellent or very good. Students highlighted the beautiful campus, the lecturers and the quality of information as features which made the experience memorable.

Not only do prospective students get course information and a taste of what it's like to be a Cambridge student, but they can also go on more in-depth tours of their chosen colleges at Cambridge. As one student simply put it: “It’s Cambridge”.

"Lots of detailed advice with engaging lecturers. The day was lively and I got to travel around the historic city.”

King's College London slides in at number two with students largely citing the facilities, campus and tour guides as features which made the day memorable.

Placed in number three is the University of Bath, with the uni highlighted for its friendliness and warm welcome.

“Everyone was really friendly and helpful and I found out everything I needed to know. The course was outstanding as well as the talks, food and hospitality.”

Oxford features at number four, with the option to stay overnight in your chosen college a key reason for making the visit memorable.

“Beautiful city, helpfulness of student helpers and engaging the subject talk was. I was able to stay in St John's college overnight and gain a deeper insight into student life.”

Just making it into the top five, Newcastle University was another student favourite, with the majority of students feeling the open days were well organised and had engaging talks. However, it was the friendliness of both students and staff that truly stood out to visitors.
