  • BA (Hons), Full-time , Duration: 3 Years
Course Summary:
**AUB's course has been recognised as a centre of excellence by The Queen’s Anniversary Prize 2017.** The course seeks to present you with demanding but exciting and valuable projects that will demonstrate the breadth of the costume and performance design subject areas and the focus that you will need to achieve in order to succeed in a competitive employment market. Graduates from this course have gone on to design and make costumes for theatres and film studios all over the world, so if this is your dream we can help you achieve it. **What you will study** You’ll discover how to create whole new worlds on this exciting and creative course. You’ll design and make costumes and sets for shows, films, plays and new performance disciplines. This is a diverse and demanding subject – you need to be interested in art, design and all types of performance. As well as technical skill, you’ll realise great design depends on your ability to interpret ideas and we place a real emphasis on conceptual work. You’ll work alongside students from the film, make-up, and acting courses on stage and film productions. While your eventual career may not be in both design and making, we believe that understanding the overall production process is what sets our students apart and gives them an edge. In the first year, the course curriculum explores both performance design and costume interpretation equally. During the second year you may if you choose, select and focus on an industry-specific specialism. Most of our students undertake a work placement in Year 2. Work placements are also an excellent opportunity to make contacts and the course has strong links in film, television and theatre. Placements can be taken at a variety of companies, including large-scale theatres, mid-sized and touring theatre productions, television or film productions, costume work rooms or running wardrobes, large costume hire companies, individual designers and makers. Approximately 75% of your time will be contact hours, including scheduled teaching sessions, but also supervised time in the workshop or studio, and the remainder will be independent study. 100% of assessment for this course is coursework based. **You can choose to complete your degree in one of the following named awards:** - BA (Hons) Costume and Performance Design (Costume Design for Screen) - BA (Hons) Costume and Performance Design (Scenography) - BA (Hons) Costume and Performance Design (Costume Supervision) - BA (Hons) Costume and Performance Design (Costume Interpretation) **By the end of the course you will be able to...** - Demonstrate and evaluate a comprehensive understanding and knowledge of costume and/or performance design through the acquisition of specific discipline skills and abilities. - Synthesise and evaluate understanding of costume and performance design and their place within the broader cultural context through the acquisition of specific discipline skills in research and critical thinking. - Illustrate your ability to use creative, aesthetic and technological skills to communicate performance design and costume interpretation solutions through a variety of methods. - Demonstrate a broad understanding of your vocational aspirations and individual practice and how your practice sits within the professional environment. - Participate in collaborative working situations that will develop your practical skills and the ability to work with others. - Synthesise and evaluate your personal strengths and needs through self-reflection that will relate to future career aspirations and potential postgraduate study. **Studios and resources** Each studio space has enough industry standard cutting and designing tables for each student to work on. Students also have access to: industrial sewing machines and overlockers, industrial steam presses, CAD driven embroidery machines and dye and textiles room, where you can use dyeing and screen printing equipment.
