Course details
Course UCAS code: T124
Qualification type:
  • BA (Hons), Full-time With Time Abroad , Duration: 4 Years
Course Summary:
This degree course offers the opportunity to study English Literature (50%) and Chinese (50%). Chinese can be studied at joint honours level in combination with another language or a variety of other subjects, with both subjects studied in equal proportions. This course will provide you with advanced skills in the Mandarin language and a broad range of specialised and detailed insights into Chinese culture, society and history. The degree has language at the heart of it, with core modules developing the key oral, aural and written skills every year. These modules also foster cultural awareness, which you will need for your year abroad, and later on, for the world of work. The English Literature part of the degree aims to develop your skills in reading literature and to introduce you to new critical techniques and ways of studying literary texts. Through the study of English literature you will develop critical capacities and a range of invaluable intellectual and interpersonal skills: the ability to evaluate and interpret material and the capacity to explain it logically, orally or on paper, the ability to work independently and as a member of a group, to manage your own time and to work to deadlines set by yourself and others. These are skills which are sought by employers in many fields. Why choose Bangor University for this course? Bangor's School of Modern Languages and Cultures consistently ranks amongst the highest rated schools in its subject area in the National Student Survey. Our size means that we offer learning on a human scale, in small classes, where you get to know the staff and your fellow students. At the same time, our very large and varied range of option modules enables you to tailor your degree to your personal needs. Some options are taught through the medium of French, others through English. Bangor's Modern Language and Cultures graduates have a very good track record in gaining employment. Degree structures are flexible, allowing you to change your degree at the end of year 1 if you wish.

How's your Welsh? Nearly half of the town speak it, so better brush up! Bangor is a beautiful place, with Snowdonia nearby. The nights out are legendary although, you'll never have one like it anywhere else. Be warned – between the massive hills everywhere and the sticky floors, you’re not gonna want to wear your best shoes. It’s a small town so you’ll make loads of friends quickly. As for the uni itself, my teachers were really charming, intelligent and unafraid to push you into new ways of thinking, and the Union were amazing at making us feel welcome and supported.
