Our English Literature course at Bath Spa University changes the way you see the world by exploring new ideas and creating new experiences. Youâll study a wide range of historical periods from Early Modern drama to Postmodern poetry through exciting and challenging modules, which explore the ways writers experiment. Youâll develop new ways of reading and thinking about this strange thing called literature, whilst playing with philosophical and political ideas.
- A large and varied course, offering you plenty of choice.
- Study a balance of canonical writers including Shakespeare, Wordsworth, Bronte, along with authors and texts who may be less familiar to you.
- A broad and diverse range of intellectually stimulating modules.
- Be taught taught by tutors in their area of research specialism.
Each year has a core module as well as a large selection of optional modules to choose from. These modules are organised around a number of key strands running through the programme â Transnational English Literature; Medical Humanities; and Digital Humanities â but you can choose to study any of the available modules and develop your own literary interests.
In your third year you can undertake independent study on a dissertation or project, focusing on an area of your own specific interest. Options range from modules on specific authors (such as Shakespeare, Virginia Woolf), to topic-based subjects (Writing and the Environment, Post-Colonial Literatures), period-based study (Gender and Eighteenth-Century Fiction, Romanticism) and popular genres (Gothic Origins and Innovations, Crime Fiction). Weâll encourage you to explore diverse areas of literature and to investigate issues that matter to you in your final year project.

Cows. Sheep. Swans. Squirrels. The Newton Park campus of Bath Spa University may as well be a zoo. Overlooking the rolling hills of Somerset, this picturesque, postcard-worthy place is perfect for the lovers of the natural world. All the essentials are here: we've got the general shop, on-campus doctors, the SU (with their unbeatable pizza meals), and of course the Starbucks. Everything is so close, you'll be able to roll out of bed and straight into a lecture. Campus is peaceful and tranquil most of the time, although you may be woken up rather early by the mooing cows outside your window.
