Course UCAS code: L700
Qualification type:
  • BA (Hons), Full-time , Duration: 3 Years
Course Summary:
Birkbeck's BA Human Geography gives you a deeper understanding of the complex processes that shape our contemporary social, political, economic and cultural life. It focuses on how we interact with each other and the environment, exploring the relationship between culture, identity, space and place, to appreciate the multiple connections between humans and the physical landscapes they inhabit. In your first year, you will acquire key disciplinary skills. You can then tailor your degree to your interests by drawing from a range of modules that focus on key contemporary issues such as globalisation, identity, racism, nationalism, community and diaspora, the city and urban inequality, international development and poverty. You will benefit from our mix of classroom and field-based teaching that brings together students from diverse backgrounds, to build social and professional networks and develop important research skills in data collection and analysis that you need for both academic research and in the workplace. The BA Human Geography is available for full-time and part-time evening study over three or four years. Highlights - We offer a range of core modules in human geography, covering major contemporary issues, such as globalisation, identity, racism, and nationalism. You can also choose modules from other disciplines, such as anthropology and international development. - We offer local and international field trips, catering to a range of themes in human geography including urbanisation, gender and globalisation. - Birkbeck teaching takes place in the evening, enabling you to work and study at the same time. You will study in small classes with internationally recognised researchers, interacting with fellow students, some of whom are already working in relevant sectors. - Birkbeck's professional recruitment service, Birkbeck Talent, can help you secure paid internships and work opportunities. Graduates in the BA Human Geography find employment in a range of areas including local government, public service, the community sector and teaching. - Our campus in London offers students the chance to explore one of the world’s great multicultural cities, and access to world-class libraries and institutions like the British Museum and the British Library.

A fantastic university! The tutors and support staff were really great, down to earth and approachable and really understanding of the work/life balance that proves a bit hard to juggle! The library was also fantastic, full of resources and with plenty of study space so you can catch up with coursework and so on. There’s a really nice, focussed vibe here and everyone is very welcoming too, which was reassuring. Living in the Intercollegiate halls was also an amazing experience, I met so many new exciting and interesting people doing all sorts of things! I heartily recommend Birkbeck.
