This course provides an introduction to studying geography at university and will help you develop the learning approaches and study skills you need to progress to an undergraduate degree in geography, including Birkbeck's BSc Geography.
This flexible, one-year course has been specifically designed for people who want to study geography at university level, but who don't have any qualifications or are returning to study after a break from formal education.
- Our academic staff are international authorities in their respective fields, delivering stimulating teaching that is specially designed for people returning to study.
- You will have access to the University of London's wealth of study resources, including Birkbeck Library, which has an extensive history collection, including the major specialist journals, and access to online materials.
- We offer multiple approaches to the study of societies and cultures, human geography, and sustainability, poverty and development, as well as community and citizenship, at local, regional and global levels.
- In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF), Sociology at Birkbeck was ranked 13th in the UK.
For information about course structure and the modules you will be studying, please visit Birkbeckâs online prospectus.

A fantastic university! The tutors and support staff were really great, down to earth and approachable and really understanding of the work/life balance that proves a bit hard to juggle! The library was also fantastic, full of resources and with plenty of study space so you can catch up with coursework and so on. There’s a really nice, focussed vibe here and everyone is very welcoming too, which was reassuring. Living in the Intercollegiate halls was also an amazing experience, I met so many new exciting and interesting people doing all sorts of things! I heartily recommend Birkbeck.
