Course details
Course UCAS code: F400
Qualification type:
  • BSc (Hons), Sandwich , Duration: 4 Years
Course Summary:
**We have greater flexibility with our entry requirements during Clearing, so let’s talk about your future. Call us on +44 (0)1202 966777 to find your place at BU this September.** You can take the degree as a BA or BSc according to whether you prefer an arts-based or scientific route, but whichever you choose you’ll gain the skills required to become a highly proficient practitioner, experienced in all forms of landscape survey, remote sensing, excavation and recording. You’ll learn through expert-led lectures, seminars and a range of fieldwork opportunities all over the UK, alongside our active team of archaeologists, and their commercial counterparts to gain essential transferable skills recognised by the Chartered Institute of Archaeologists. There’s also the opportunity to complete a potentially career-shaping five or 30-week placement in industry, and attend an archaeological field school at the end of year one. This course received an impressive 100% overall satisfaction rating from our final year students in the latest National Student Survey (NSS, 2018). Students have attended placements with some of the leading UK archaeological organisations, and foreign placements, often via the Grampus programme, in Cyprus, Finland and Iceland. Graduates have gone on to work in roles for English Heritage, Border Archaeology, Hertfordshire County Council, National Trust, Historic Scotland, Museum of London Archaeology Services, Oxford Archaeology and Wessex Archaeology, to name a few.
Modules:
You'll study a number of units including AAFS study skills, ancient people and places, approaches in archaeology, archaeological practice, gathering time, studying ancient materials, archaeological science, environmental archaeology, field and research skills, post-excavation skills, archaeological management and independent research project along with a number of optional units.

Bournemouth is an amazing student city, with new club nights on all the time and a great atmosphere. The beach is lovely and the centre of student life in the Summer. Everybody is friendly, with a great diverse student body. There’s loads of places in town - try the Buffalo, a short bus ride away from the centre but with amazing drinks and staff. The tutors are great, providing interesting and dynamic lectures and offering a load of support and guidance.

It was fine. The academics were the best part, and the archaeology department is excellent, all the staff are really friendly and they all know you by name cause the course is so small. The uni itself is not the best but definitely not the worst I've seen, and SUBU is pretty good. Accommodation is quite bad, but the quality of the housing is fine, there's just not enough of it. Student houses are usually awful, but there are some good ones around. My overall uni experience has been pretty fine with Bournemouth.
