The Foundation Year for Medicine is aimed at students from the North West of England who have the potential and aspiration to become doctors. It is for anyone who has studied the A levels required for entry onto our MBChB medical programme but whose background may mean it is less likely that they will be able to meet the academic entry requirements for direct entry onto the MBChB. You must meet certain widening participation criteria to be eligible to apply.
The programme focuses on academic achievement in medical sciences, together with the development of leadership, management and communication skills and an understanding of public health. Opportunities for clinical and community learning will be supported by work experience, voluntary work or work shadowing, to develop an understanding of the people within the local community where care is provided.
**While this foundation year does not normally lead to an award or qualification in its own right, successful completion of the foundation year at the required pass mark enables progression onto the five-year MBChB medical programme at Edge Hill University.**
Please see our website for information on available modules.
You will be assessed through a combination of reflective essays, case-based assignments, Observed Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs) and multiple choice examinations.

Great place, with so many friendly people! There's loads to do, no matter what you’re into – you can hike in the Lake District or go down to the lovely beach in Sefton, or party in Liverpool or Manchester, all of which is less than half an hour away on trains or via cheap taxis. Ormskirk is a little small, but that’s the only problem! The teachers are incredibly supportive and friendly, and you'll have access to loads of helpful resources on your course.

I can thankfully say that I made the right choice in uni for me. I honestly love it here and will be really sad to leave when I graduate. I can happily vouch that there are things to do if you don’t drink or do clubbing etc. here.
