Qualification type:
  • BA (Hons), Full-time Including Foundation Year , Duration: 4 Years
Course Summary:
At Keele University, we're different. Nestled in 600 acres of countryside in the heart of the UK, we have a big campus but a small and cosmopolitan community. We're proud to be 'University of the Year for Student Experience' in The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2017, in addition to having been ranked No.1 in the National Student Survey 2014-2016. This is because it's more than green and lovely, it's a place of research and academic excellence too. Studying The Humanities Foundation Year will allow for an exploration and deeper understanding of various subject disciplines, which can then be focused when progressing onto an honours degree at Keele. This course provides preparation for the academic skills required for degree level study, delivering the opportunity to develop the questioning and analytical skills required for progression in your chosen humanities subject. After you have completed your Humanities Foundation Year, you could progress on to the Philosophy programme. Keele Philosophy is strong on research and consistently highly ranked for student satisfaction (96% in the NSS 2017). The course is exceptionally broad and encompasses analytic and continental traditions, and the study of philosophical theories from around the world. Keele philosophers have particular strengths in researching mind, metaphysics and the meaning of life, as well as the history of philosophy. You will explore central themes, such as moral and political philosophy, logic, epistemology, the philosophy of mind and will consider key philosophical problems about the nature of the world, the mind and the various solutions proposed. You'll learn about different philosophical traditions past and present, including Anglo-American, Indian, Buddhist, Greek, French and German philosophy. You will study texts, think about ideas and formulate your own philosophical theories. The degree offers flexibility and a chance to specialise on a subject of your choice with a dissertation in the third year. You'll enhance your logical and critical thinking skills, develop the use of sound arguments to defend your views, while detecting fallacies and other argumentative weaknesses. Keele has a thriving student-led Philosophy Society, and the programme engages widely with other universities, especially through its Royal Institute of Philosophy lecture series.
