BSc (Hons), Sandwich Including Industrial Placement
, Duration: 4 Years
At Keele University, weâre different. Nestled in 600 acres of countryside in the heart of the UK, we have a big campus but a small and cosmopolitan community. Weâre proud to be âUniversity of the Year for Student Experienceâ in The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2017, in addition to having been ranked No.1 in the National Student Survey 2014-2016. This is because itâs more than green and lovely, itâs a place of research and academic excellence too.
At Keele, studying a combined honours degree will include some modules from both of the single honours degrees. In this case, your programme will be made up of a combination of modules from both Environmental Science and Physical Geography.
With the Environmental Science course at Keele you will develop the scientific understanding and practical skills needed to help tackle many of the world's
major environmental (and societal) problems such as climate change, food security, water resources, pollution and conservation.
Our Environmental Science course draws on expertise within the disciplines of life sciences, chemical sciences and geosciences as well as the expertise of our environmental staff and their experience of working in environmental regulation and environmental consultancy. The course emphasises the role and importance of scientific understanding and practical skills in the analysis and management of environmental problems, ensuring a course which is targeted at employment in the environmental sector. Alongside studying topical global environmental issues and solutions, you will have the opportunity to develop a broad
range of practical, laboratory and field-based skills working with a range of environmental samples, as well as developing expertise in Geographic Information Systems and statistical analysis. You will also have the opportunity to complete fieldwork overseas, gain valuable work experience or study abroad at one of our partner institutions.
Keele is a great place to study Physical Geography. We have a beautiful campus, excellent facilities and a really friendly atmosphere. In Physical Geography at Keele you will study the global environment, environmental change and fascinating landscapes, developing skills that will be valuable in a range of different careers. The course combines fieldwork, practical classes, tutorials and lectures that will give you confidence both in hands-on skills and in your theoretical understanding of the world around us. The first year provides a foundation for a diverse range of specialist options available in subsequent years. We focus particularly on research skills: you will learn to collect, analyse and interpret different types of data, and to carry out your own research using specialist software
and equipment. Field courses are a real highlight of the programme, and recent destinations have included Iceland and Almeria. We have excellent facilities, and even provide drones for student use in the GIS classes!
Studying Environmental Science puts you in an excellent position to pursue a career in many areas including environmental consultancy and regulation, water resource management, geospatial analysis, conservation, or to become a scientific writer, research scientist or teacher. This course also provides excellent training for further postgraduate study and research. If you take our work placement year youâll graduate with a significant level of environmental work experience.
Studying Physical Geography could take you straight into directly related careers such as environmental planning or consultancy, or you could apply them
in industries such as energy, agriculture, meteorology or construction. Your expertise in environmental processes and spatial organisation will be useful in management, logistics, and planning. Your problem-solving skills and global, interdisciplinary approach will be of value in a huge range of careers.
