At Keele, studying a combined honours degree will include some modules from both of the single honours degrees. In this case, your programme will be made up of a combination of modules from both Environmental Science and Human Geography.
With the Environmental Science course at Keele you will develop the scientific understanding and practical skills needed to help tackle many of the world's major environmental (and societal) problems such as climate change, food security, water resources, pollution and conservation.
Our Environmental Science course draws on expertise within the disciplines of life sciences, chemical sciences and geosciences as well as the expertise of our environmental staff and their experience of working in environmental regulation and environmental consultancy. The course emphasises the role and importance of scientific understanding and practical skills in the analysis and management of environmental problems, ensuring a course which is targeted at employment in the environmental sector. Alongside studying topical global environmental issues and solutions, you will have the opportunity to develop a broad
range of practical, laboratory and field-based skills working with a range of environmental samples, as well as developing expertise in Geographic Information Systems and statistical analysis. You will also have the opportunity to complete fieldwork overseas, gain valuable work experience or study abroad at one of our partner institutions.
This highly interdisciplinary Human Geography course provides you with a strong theoretical and practical background in Human Geography giving you the understanding and skills to explore an array of world issues from different perspectives. Our course offers zero-cost options for overseas field courses, exceptional staff support for students, and is ranked Top 10 in The Guardian University Guide 2018.
This course will take you to fascinating fieldwork destinations in the UK and overseas, where youâll add to your growing skills in understanding and influencing the way humans relate to the environment. In the lab, the field and the archive, youâll explore the characteristics, diversity, interdependence and changing nature of places. Youâll understand the applications and possibilities Human Geography provides in solving problems, creating wealth and improving quality of life. Youâll collect and analyse spatial, social and environmental data, and become familiar with industry standard GIS software for analysing, visualising and integrating that data.
Studying Environmental Science y puts you in an excellent position to pursue a career in many areas including environmental consultancy and regulation, water resource management, geospatial analysis, conservation, or to become a scientific writer, research scientist or teacher. This course also provides excellent training for further postgraduate study and research. If you take our work placement year youâll graduate with a significant level of environmental work experience.
Additionally, studying Human Geography provides skills that are invaluable as you address social, environmental, ethical and global problems as part of your studies or in the world of work. You might go on to work as a planning and development surveyor, logistics manager, residential surveyor, town planner, international development worker, transport planner or market researcher.
