Course Summary:
Building services engineering encompasses heating, lighting, power, lifts, air conditioning and other services, each one being a self-contained discipline. Within a project, each of these disciplines will have their own priorities and targets. As project manager, you would not only manage and liaise with the various engineering trades involved, you would also work closely with builders, architects, structural engineers, civil engineers, contractors and lawyers to ensure that all of the different technologies merge into one functional, efficient building - and all within the constraints of budget, time and quality. Today, buildings account for nearly half of the total carbon released into the atmosphere from fossil fuels, so you would be tackling the challenge of climate change by translating design ideas into practical, operational - and low carbon - engineering systems. This is a professional role with great responsibility in high value contractual situations. The course will give you the opportunity to develop these high levels of proficiency through challenging theoretical and practical work, including the option to do a year's paid work experience with a building services engineering consultant or contractor (subject to finding a suitable placement).
Modules:
Please see guidance on core and option modules for further information on what you will study. During level 4, students gain the basic knowledge and theory of the Building Services Engineering discipline. They gain an introduction to construction technology, engineering principles, science and materials, and mathematics. Students will also undertake a building services design project and get involved in exciting collaborative interdisciplinary activities, as well as becoming skilled in academic and digital literacy. During level 5, students further their knowledge and skills in mechanical and electrical engineering, relating the key principles to building services systems. This culminates in a major practical building services design project, as well as an interdisciplinary project which incorporates building information management (BIM), and students are encouraged to use industry standard building modelling software. Students also study contracts and procurement, together with management techniques for the construction and building services industries and are introduced to engineering research methods. At the conclusion of level 5 students will have the option to take up a year's paid work placement with a building services engineering consultant or contractor. During level 6, students focus on the issues of sustainability in building services design. Again these key concepts are utilised to complete integrative multi-disciplinary design projects. Students will also further their learning in the area of business and project management techniques as well as undertaking a major engineering research project (dissertation). Modules are designated as core or option in accordance with professional body requirements and internal Academic Framework review, so may be subject to change. Students will be required to undertake modules that the University designates as core and will have a choice of designated option modules. Additionally, option modules may be offered subject to meeting minimum student numbers. Please see the programme specification document for further details on this course.
Assessment Methods:
Assessment varies depending on the modules you choose. All students perform differently depending on the type of assessment they are asked to do, and so a variety of assessment methods are used. These include exams (open and closed book), coursework (projects, technical reports, reviews, etc), and presentations (individual and group). Your tutors will give prompt and constructive feedback via our virtual learning environment, face-to-face or in writing. This will help you to identify your strengths as well as the areas where you may need to put in more work.

You'll have such a gret time at John Moores, you won't want to leave! Liverpool is a fantastic city to live in, really vibrant and it really feels like being at the heart of something. The Raz (or The Blue Angel to the uninitiated) is a great club. There’s also amazing shops and cafes down Bold Street, and there are loads of interesting societies to keep you busy. The uni is incredibly supportive, with a responsive SU and fascinating tutors who are always ready to help out with your studies.

    It is a good university and tries hard to satisfy students but is not quite a Russell group uni

    I am so glad I picked this university to go to. If you pick the right accommodation, it is cheap but modern (Ablett House for 2nd and 3rd year or Glassworks for first year).
