Course Summary:
Sport and exercise is a huge and rapidly expanding global industry, while levels of public fitness and participation in physical activity are issues on the political agenda. For this reason, sport and exercise scientists are in increasing demand, particularly given the drive of professional athletes to maximise their potential. This degree course offers you the opportunity to study Sport and Exercise Science at one of the UK's leading universities. You will develop your knowledge and understanding of the Sport and Exercise Sciences across a wide range of disciplines, which will allow you to apply this knowledge and understanding in the context of sports performance, physical activity, health and wellbeing. You will benefit from access to state-of-the-art laboratories which will allow you to develop your practical, scientific and laboratory skills, enabling you to apply your knowledge to sport, exercise and other contexts. You will be part of a school and university that is uniquely associated with sport. The modular structure of the degree (and wide range of options) enables you to tailor your studies towards your own career aspirations. There continues to be extensive investment in the facilities within the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences, making it a great place to study. As an undergraduate student, you have access to the very best facilities - including specialist teaching and research laboratories for human and exercise physiology, biochemistry and molecular biology, biomechanics, motor control and psychology. Loughborough University research supported Team GB in the 2012 and 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Loughborough is also home to a new £10 million, pioneering National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine.
Year 1: You will embark on a compulsory first year which provides a platform for future years. Modules will provide fundamental information in anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, cell biology, structural kinesiology, biomechanics, motor control, skill acquisition and psychology. Additional modules addressing the Research, Employability and Professional Development Skills necessary for a successful career Sport and Exercise Sciences will also be taken. Year 2: In your second year your choice of options enables you to the tailor the course towards your own interests and aspirations. There are compulsory modules to develop research and professional skills. Year 3: You will select additional modules where you will be able to further specialise in two of the disciplines above. These modules will be more in depth and encourage you to foster a multi-disciplinary approach to understanding the contemporary scientific determinants of sport and exercise performance. You will also undertake a substantial Research Project module that will involve investigating a sport and exercise science topic in which you have developed a particular interest. You will also have the opportunity to advance your vocational and practitioner skills with a module focussing on aspects of sports performance and health and wellbeing. Assessment Methods:
Depending on the nature of the material, some modules are assessed by a mixture of coursework and examination (for example 25% coursework and 75% examination), whilst other modules are assessed by 100% coursework or 100% by examination. Coursework is based on a variety of tasks including individual essays, projects, in-class tests, lab reports, contribution in tutorials, group work and presentations.

Loughborough is an incredible university. The halls are excellent, clean and spacious, and the uni makes everything really exciting in first year with so much to get involved in. The sports and exercise facilities at the uni are really amazing too. There are so many great support structures and opportunities to join the union, as well as special campaigns, like Play With Pride, so you'll feel welcome and inspired throughout your studies.
