Course Summary:
At Loughborough, you will benefit from a thorough grounding in physics, combined with options from a range of engineering disciplines at one of the UK's leading universities for engineering. You also have the opportunity to spend a year employed in an industrial or research environment. All our courses include BSc and MPhys options and an advanced research project. The MPhys courses may be taken in four or five years. The five-year version of the course includes either a sandwich year of employment in industry or a year of study abroad between the second and the third or the third and the fourth year of study.
Modules:
Year 1 Indicative areas studied include symmetry, conservation laws, least action, electromagnetism, relativity, and supporting mathematics. Year 2 Indicative areas studied include quantum physics, condensed matter, statistical physics, the physics of materials, and engineering. Optional placement/study year Optional industrial placement and/or overseas study. Year 4 Indicative areas studied include advanced physics and engineering modules (informed by departmental research – MPhys only) or an engineering physics project (BSc only). Final year MPhys Indicative areas studied include advanced physics and engineering modules (informed by departmental research) and a substantial research project in engineering physics. Assessment Methods:
Depending on the nature of the material, some modules are assessed by a mixture of coursework and examination (for example 25% coursework and 75% examination), whilst other modules are assessed by 100% coursework or 100% by examination. Coursework is based on a variety of tasks including individual essays, projects, laboratory work, contribution in tutorials, group work and presentations.

Loughborough is an incredible university. The halls are excellent, clean and spacious, and the uni makes everything really exciting in first year with so much to get involved in. The sports and exercise facilities at the uni are really amazing too. There are so many great support structures and opportunities to join the union, as well as special campaigns, like Play With Pride, so you'll feel welcome and inspired throughout your studies.
