Autonomous and robotic systems are ever growing in the world around us; from heavy duty industrial robotic arms in production chains, to robot vacuum cleaners or lawn mowers, self-driving cars and drones to space robotics, or any other Mechatronic or autonomous system. There is a strong strategic direction for global industry in Robotics and Automated Systems (RAS) as evidenced by a host of national and international strategy documents and networks.
The aim of this new degree programme is to provide a solid foundation in Robotics, Mechatronics and Control disciplines with a primary focus on Electronic and Electrical Engineering. The programme will enable students to understand the fundamental processes and techniques in autonomous systems. The programme will link high quality in-class teaching with advanced hands-on activities, group work and individual projects to provide a complete learning environment.
The Wolfson School is perfectly equipped with the experience and expertise to deliver best practise in the field by recently being placed 3rd in the Guardian rankings for Mechanical Engineering and 9th for Electronic and Electrical. Teaching will draw upon knowledge from internationally recognised research areas such as Control Systems Engineering, Intelligent Automation and Systems Engineering to provide content that aligns with current industrial practice.
Our Robotics courses have a common first year – your 'essential tool kit'. This gives the flexibility to change course at the end of Year 1 or in some cases at the end of Year 2. It also means that students starting on the BEng course can change to the MEng course if their first year performance is sufficiently strong.
Years 1 and 2 of the BEng and MEng courses are similar, but from there on, each course develops its own flavour and engineering emphasis and each student can further tailor their course with optional modules to suit personal preferences and aptitudes.
The first academic year of the BEng course gets you up to speed with the core subjects around Robotics, Mechatronics and Control Engineering. All the modules during this year are compulsory, to ensure a solid foundation in your knowledge is established ahead of progressing into the second academic year.
The second academic year of the BEng course builds on the Robotics, Mechatronics and Control Engineering core knowledge developed during Year 1.
The final academic year of the BEng course is structured around an Individual Project, together with a Robotics, Mechatronics and Control Engineering core. Further modules are chosen from the selection of additional optional subjects, with the opportunity to include modules from other courses within the university during the final academic year.

Lecture based modules are assessed by a combination of coursework and formal examinations taken at the end of each semester. Project module assessments require written reports and technical presentations, preparing you for your subsequent career. The proportion of coursework assessment is approximately 30% to 50% depending on degree course, semester/year and optional modules.

Loughborough is an incredible university. The halls are excellent, clean and spacious, and the uni makes everything really exciting in first year with so much to get involved in. The sports and exercise facilities at the uni are really amazing too. I cannot think of any reason why students shouldn't come here. We have every society from Harry Potter to YouTube. There is a healthy competition between halls which makes freshers' week extra interesting.
