Course Summary:
Our Mathematics courses provide a balanced study of the most important aspects of maths so that you can achieve a thorough understanding of the fundamentals to help prepare you for a successful career. The MMath course is especially suitable for those interested in research careers in mathematics in universities, industry or research establishments. Progress on the MMath course is dependent on a high level of attainment at the end of Years 1 and 2. Transfer to the MMath course from the BSc course is also possible for students performing sufficiently well. The MMath and BSc courses in Mathematics are the same over Years 1 and 2.
Modules:
Year 1: Areas studied include mathematical methods, analysis, linear algebra, geometry, computing and numerical methods, probability and statistics, and mechanics. Year 2: Areas studied include algebra, analysis, complex variables, mathematical methods, differential geometry and topology, probability, and calculus of variations. You will usually choose three optional modules from a wide range of topics in pure and applied mathematics and statistics. Up to two modules taught by other Departments in the University may be included. Optional placement/study year: Salaried industrial placement and/or overseas study. Year 3 MMath: Areas studied include a variety of options in pure and applied mathematics and statistics, and a mathematics project. You will usually choose ten optional modules from a wide range of topics in pure and applied mathematics, statistics and mathematical physics. Up to two modules taught by other Departments in the University may be included. Final year MMath: Areas studied include topics chosen from all areas of pure and applied mathematics, together with a compulsory mathematics project. You will usually choose six optional modules from a wide range of topics in pure and applied mathematics and statistics. Assessment Methods:
Depending on the nature of the material, some modules are assessed by a mixture of coursework and examination (for example 25% coursework and 75% examination), whilst other modules are assessed by 100% coursework or 100% by examination.

Loughborough is an incredible university. The halls are excellent, clean and spacious, and the uni makes everything really exciting in first year with so much to get involved in. The sports and exercise facilities at the uni are really amazing too. There are so many great support structures and opportunities to join the union, as well as special campaigns, like Play With Pride, so you'll feel welcome and inspired throughout your studies.

    I think it is a good university giving students a good experience. The students' union facilities are excellent especially the Student Voice department.
