Our Mathematics courses provide a balanced study of the most important aspects of maths so that you can achieve a thorough understanding of the fundamentals to help prepare you for a successful career.
The MMath course is especially suitable for those interested in research careers in mathematics in universities, industry or research establishments.
Progress on the MMath course is dependent on a high level of attainment at the end of Years 1 and 2. Transfer to the MMath course from the BSc course is also possible for students performing sufficiently well.
The MMath and BSc courses in Mathematics are the same over Years 1 and 2.
Areas studied include mathematical methods, analysis, linear algebra, geometry, computing and numerical methods, probability and statistics, and mechanics.
Areas studied include algebra, analysis, complex variables, mathematical methods, differential geometry and topology, probability, and calculus of variations.
You will usually choose three optional modules from a wide range of topics in pure and applied mathematics and statistics. Up to two modules taught by other Departments in the University may be included.
Optional placement/study year:
Salaried industrial placement and/or overseas study.
Year 3 MMath:
Areas studied include a variety of options in pure and applied mathematics and statistics, and a mathematics project.
You will usually choose ten optional modules from a wide range of topics in pure and applied mathematics, statistics and mathematical physics. Up to two modules taught by other Departments in the University may be included.
Final year MMath:
Areas studied include topics chosen from all areas of pure and applied mathematics, together with a compulsory mathematics project.
You will usually choose six optional modules from a wide range of topics in pure and applied mathematics and statistics.
A full list of indicative modules is available on the course page of our website.
Depending on the nature of the material, some modules are assessed by a mixture of coursework and examination (for example 25% coursework and 75% examination), whilst other modules are assessed by 100% coursework or 100% by examination.
