English with Digital Humanities BA (Hons) is a new and innovative course designed for students who wish to combine elements of a traditional English degree with the acquisition of new digital skills. English with Digital Humanities BA (Hons) introduces the new and rapidly evolving field of digital humanities, and focusses, in particular, on the significance of the digital revolution for the reading of literary texts. It will equip you with skills in textual interpretation and analysis as well as applied digital knowledge in web design and blogging, desk top publishing, text encoding, data visualisation and digital editing. Our academic staff are recognised for their expertise in digital approaches to literature, literary and editorial theory, contemporary publishing, and all the periods of literary history. Their knowledge and enthusiasm for their research and teaching in these areas makes this a vibrant and supportive place for you to study, with top-of-the-range technical facilities available to assist you in developing the digital acumen that will make you stand out in a fast-changing workplace. The BA Hons English with Digital Humanities will introduce you to key literary concepts and periods in your first year, through a range of carefully designed core modules introducing the fundamentals of poetic metre and poetic form, the study of language, and narrative forms and fictions. In addition, the 'How to Do Things with Digital Texts' module will explore the interpretive possibilities opened up by the shift from print to digital literary forms. Students will also be given a choice of options, including options in creative writing, film and literary history. Modules on offer in the second year include core options surveying the major authors and periods in literary history, and 'The Digital Literary Sphere', which explores the ways in which literary culture has changed in response to the digital revolution. The knowledge and skills acquired through these modules will prepare you for the Digital Humanities dissertation, which is a core element of your third year. The work you do here will be complemented by the 'Building Digital Editions' module, which introduces theories of online editing and offers you the opportunity to edit your own text for publication online.
Modules:
Year 1 Areas studied include digital texts, narrative forms and fiction, poetry, and literary and critical theories. Year 2 Areas studied include the digital literary sphere, Renaissance writings, Victorian literature and writing from the Modernist period, as well as a range of optional modules. I cannot think of any reason why students shouldn't come here. We have every society from Harry Potter to YouTube. There is a healthy competition between halls which makes freshers' week extra interesting.
