Study an innovative dental curriculum at a top school with world-class facilities and access to Londonâs diverse population. This five-year degree is designed to help you build the skills youâll need as a dental professional. The Institute of Dentistry at Barts and the London follows a new and innovative curriculum: youâll study care of the mouth, including prevention and treatment of dental diseases, screening for oral cancers, managing trauma, orthodontics and oral surgery.
Our location in east London means youâll serve a population of great diversity and encounter a wide range of disease, including some of the more unusual oral cancers. Youâll be exposed to patients early on, and as you progress in your studies youâll work in our outreach clinics in Canary Wharf, Stratford and Southend-on-Sea. We encourage you to take a holistic approach to dentistry by studying the human sciences along with your core dentistry modules â including sociology and psychology â to examine patientsâ attitude to oral healthcare and the dental profession.
Scientific basis of clinical practice (Year 1)
Weâll introduce you to basic biological principles and help you to develop the study skills youâll need throughout the programme.

the bodyâs main organs and systems
the effects of illness on people and their families
the impact of environmental and social factors on health
the normal biological structure and function of cells
Weâll assess your progress throughout the programme, using:
continuous assessment â including in-course examinations, independent projects and success in student-selected components
examinations â where youâll demonstrate the knowledge, skills and attitudes youâve developed throughout the programme
formative assessments, which do not count towards your final marks but allow us to identify whether you need additional help with your studies
Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs) to assess your clinical and communication skills. Youâll be assessed on your ability to interact with clinical simulations, accomplish tasks and communicate or interact with both real and simulated patients.

This is a great uni. It is close to public transport, whilst also having an array of cheap take out, restaurants and fast food options for students. The freshers events are great to make friends and get involved. Don't miss any! The departments are very friendly by letting people change courses, providing links to careers website and going the extra effort to provide the best experience. It's very diverse in culture and backgrounds and reflects the London environment.
