Southampton Solentâs digital arts foundation year covers key subjects such as animation, game development and modelling, and will help equip you with the knowledge and confidence to make informed decisions about your future direction.
The learning path is designed to seamlessly integrate with our related degree courses and offers flexible learning experiences in the field of digital media. Successful completion of the programme will grant direct access on to one of our related industry-focused undergraduate degrees.
You will be taught by passionate staff who are experts in their fields, with a wealth of real-world experience and knowledge. During your studies youâll be supported in developing your game production, business and entrepreneurial skills, as well as working with coders and artists in the Video Games Academy.
To aid study, youâll have full access to Solentâs industry-standard facilities, including specialist labs, high-end dual screen computers equipped with industry software such as Autodesk, Adobe and Pixologic, and graphics tablets. Youâll also have access to a motion capture studio and lounge equipped with consoles and life drawing studio. Successful completion of the Digital Arts Foundation Year will provide a pathway to the degree BSc (Hons) Computer Games (Software Development).
Alongside the development of advanced programming skills, this course covers computer graphics, the business of games, employability, project management, and the industry-standard Agile software development methodology. This broad comprehension will put you in the best possible position to find a place in this growing industry after graduation.
Development units remain the primary focus of the curriculum, where youâll learn the latest programming and engine-based scripting methods from seasoned industry practitioners. Youâll also learn about game design theory, with a focus on producing fun, innovative games.
Solent University is part of the Southern Independent Games Network (SIGN). This network is focused primarily on providing support in areas associated with the business aspects of the games industry including funding, tax, marketing, law and intellectual property. This is carried out through a series of events and web-based resources, as well as by facilitating connections between members of the network and professionals within (and complimentary to) the video games industry.
