This course is aimed at students who have the potential to become dentists but do not meet the academic criteria to apply directly to BDS Dentistry. It is a widening participation initiative for UK students who fulfil specific criteria.
The course aims to develop your knowledge and understanding of the basic sciences that underpin the study of dentistry and to foster professional behaviours and attitudes. Dental work experience forms part of the course. Successful completion of this year will allow you to progress to the BDS Dentistry.
Please note: This course is open to applicants from specific schools and colleges in the UK only.**
Further information, and lists of the eligible schools and colleges, can be found on the admissions statement.
Health and Disclosure and Barring Service check
Certain health conditions may be incompatible with careers in dentistry. Before starting your degree, you will need to complete a health assessment questionnaire and pre-course screening for blood-borne viruses. These blood tests are to identify the few whose health status may place them and/or future patients at risk.
In accordance with General Dental Council guidelines on fitness to practise, some students may not be suitable for a career in dentistry. All dental students are required to complete a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, in line with other health-related courses in the UK.

Bristol’s great if you don’t really fancy concrete and a bustling metropolis – it’s a city uni with leafy streets, loads of independent shops and an intimate, community vibe. The city is kind of expensive, but if you budget properly you can stretch your loan out to have a great time here. There are loads of things to do in town, with a hectic nightlife and a great dubstep/drum and bass scene! The Uni is amazing too, with great facilities (the free bus onto campus is very helpful), and amazing tutors who were really inspiring and helpful.
