Course Summary:
Our Joint Honours English and Classical Studies degree combines investigation of the ancient Greco-Roman world with the study of works from all periods of English literature, many of which reflect or reanimate ancient texts and topics. Both halves of the course give you the opportunity to follow your own interests and particular enthusiasms through optional units, including Latin or Ancient Greek. You may also study ancient arts, such as epic or drama, alongside their more modern forms in literature written in English. Your dissertation in year three will draw on both degree subjects to discuss a topic that concerns both the ancient world and English literature.

Bristol’s great if you don’t really fancy concrete and a bustling metropolis – it’s a city uni with leafy streets, loads of independent shops and an intimate, community vibe. The city is kind of expensive, but if you budget properly you can stretch your loan out to have a great time here. There are loads of things to do in town, with a hectic nightlife and a great dubstep/drum and bass scene! The Uni is amazing too, with great facilities (the free bus onto campus is very helpful), and amazing tutors who were really inspiring and helpful.

Less hands on than I thought it would be, more independent reading and less class time than I expected but overall, really great faculty and community.

I think the university itself needs to be less complacent and put more effort into helping its students and providing them with an organised, enjoyable experience. However, Bristol itself makes up for a lot of my grievances with the running of the university and my course. Also, despite the downsides, I have been taught by some lovely, fascinating people!
