These courses combine elements of our Physics and Astrophysics degrees and are popular routes if you want to keep options open for further study. UCLan's Physics with Astrophysics degree courses provide a comprehensive education in the subject, from quantum physics to the formation of the Universe. You will improve your mathematical skills, backed up by practical laboratory experience, and gain an in-depth knowledge of the laws of physics, and the stars and galaxies that make up the universe. You will become highly proficient at problem solving and solving challenges by thinking creatively. These, along with the practical skills gained through planning experiments, processing, analysing, and interpreting data, are skills which are useful for any career.
The University has its own observatory, the Alston Observatory, one of the largest teaching observatories in the UK. It is used weekly by Year 1 students on all degrees, and throughout the Astrophysics degrees, and enables you to make real astronomical observations.
You will have the opportunity to study abroad, either a whole year of study with an approved international partner university, or a project within a collaborating research group, such as in Germany, Italy, Spain, South Africa, or with NASA in the USA.
Graduates of Physics, Astronomy, and Astrophysics are amongst the most employable in the world and are in particularly high demand for technical and business sectors, where analytical and mathematical skills are at a premium. Graduates have found employment in industry, government research institutes, overseas laboratories and observatories, financial institutions, teaching and scientific journalism.

Year 2: Compulsory modules; Electromagnetism and Waves, Thermal and Quantum Physics, Astrophysics II, Laboratory Physics and Astrophysics, Ordinary Differential Equations. Optional modules; Scientific Computing, Vector Calculus, Lagrangian and Hamiltonian Mechanics
Year 3: Compulsory modules; Electrodynamics and Advanced Quantum Mechanics, Relativity and Cosmology, Laboratory Physics and Astrophysics, Project. Optional modules; Formation, Structure, and Evolution of Stars, Nuclear and Particle Physics, Condensed Matter (Solid State and Soft Matter), Fluid Dynamics, Partial Differential Equations and Integral Transforms

Preston’s such a lovely student city – there’s something on each night and the prices are amazing, it’s really geared toward students. Warehouse and The Ship Inn saw the most of my nights out in town. It’s not really a bustling metropolis, but less distractions = more work done! And if you’re wanting a huge night, Liverpool’s about half an hour on the train and is amazing. My course is great, with fascinating, empathetic teachers who really support and encourage us, and the facilities are top notch. The Student Union is also incredibly supportive, and they always have time for us.

Honestly I could not recommend UCLan anymore than I am. I wholeheartedly believe that the lecturers are there to help you learn and grow as a person rather to just keep up rankings. You are made to feel like an individual and not just another student.
I think uclan is a really good choice of uni for a take of students. They allow room for independent learning and have an incredible wealth of recourses while also offering the help anyone may need and hubs for information whenever you might need it.
