BA (Hons), Full-time Including Foundation Year
, Duration: 4 Years
Our four-year BA Film Studies (including foundation year), will be suitable for you if your academic qualifications do not yet meet our entrance requirements for the three-year version of this course and you want a programme that increases your subject knowledge as well as improves your academic skills in order to support your academic performance. This four-year course includes a foundation year (Year Zero), followed by a further three years of study. During your Year Zero, you study three academic subjects relevant to your chosen course as well as a compulsory academic skills module, with additional English language for non-English speakers. We give you the opportunity to explore film across a broad range of genres, time periods, and regions, from Hollywood, world and independent cinema, to documentaries and television. Simultaneously, you gain hands-on experience in film production and production management, essential for careers in the film and television industry.
Many of our courses offer a choice of optional modules to tailor your learning experience. More information about these can be found on the University of Essex website.

Essex was amazing! The campus was seriously beautiful, had many a lovely afternoon sat by the lake on campus trying to revise. There’s a great community feel here, everyone is very friendly and there are amazing support services at the Union. Be sure to pick the right accommodation – if you’re ready to party every night, stay at the Towers, where no-one ever sleeps! If you’re a quieter type, the South Courts are a bit more relaxed although there’s still parties to be had. My teachers were also amazing, and I had a great time on my course.
