Ranked among the top Computer Science (and Information Systems) departments on the planet according to the QS World University Rankings (2017), our BEng Computer Networks examines computer and data networking, which are vital to our modern technological society. As well as enabling many new applications, they have revolutionised traditional telecommunications services such as telephony. There is a growing demand for professionals who can apply advanced knowledge of networking principles and networked application. You combine a theoretical and practical study of network architectures, protocols, communication programming, distributed systems and security. This degree is accredited by both the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and the British Computer Society (BCS). These accreditations are increasingly sought by employers, and provide the first stage towards eventual professional registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng). On the four year version of our course, you have the option to spend your third year on a placement with an external organisation.
Many of our courses offer a choice of optional modules to tailor your learning experience. More information about these can be found on the University of Essex website.

Essex was amazing! The campus was seriously beautiful, had many a lovely afternoon sat by the lake on campus trying to revise. There’s a great community feel here, everyone is very friendly and there are amazing support services at the Union. Be sure to pick the right accommodation – if you’re ready to party every night, stay at the Towers, where no-one ever sleeps! If you’re a quieter type, the South Courts are a bit more relaxed although there’s still parties to be had. My teachers were also amazing, and I had a great time on my course.
