Our Law department is ranked among the top 200 departments on the planet according to the QS World University Rankings (2017). You receive a rigorous academic training in the discipline of law, as well as an opportunity to spend your third year abroad. You develop a critical awareness of the nature of law within its social, political and economic contexts and develop an approach to the discipline so that you can see each subject area as part of an integrated whole. We emphasise an awareness of the place of the law in England and Wales in its European and international frameworks. This allows you to develop critical, analytical, research, problem solving, and transferable skills. You also acquire the ability to construct a logical argument and to communicate that argument clearly, both orally and in writing, as well as to consider, evaluate and respond to alternative and, possibly, conflicting points of view. Your third year spent abroad gives you the chance to gain more experience and become even more employable.
Many of our courses offer a choice of optional modules to tailor your learning experience. More information about these can be found on the University of Essex website.

Essex was amazing! The campus was seriously beautiful, had many a lovely afternoon sat by the lake on campus trying to revise. There’s a great community feel here, everyone is very friendly and there are amazing support services at the Union. Be sure to pick the right accommodation – if you’re ready to party every night, stay at the Towers, where no-one ever sleeps! If you’re a quieter type, the South Courts are a bit more relaxed although there’s still parties to be had. My teachers were also amazing, and I had a great time on my course.
