Maths is everywhere and our courses are an exciting challenge. You apply your skills to understand and analyse data using modern statistical methods. The orientation is a balance between solid theory and practical application in problems arising from finance, medicine, biology, economics and other fields of modern research. In the first year you take basic mathematics courses, together with an introduction to statistics and probability. In subsequent years you expand your knowledge of mathematics and embark deeper into statistical methods, analysis of data, linear models and survival analysis. In your final year you have the opportunity to pursue further topics in advanced statistics and mathematics and also take a project on mathematical statistics, data analysis or computational statistics.
Many of our courses offer a choice of optional modules to tailor your learning experience. More information about these can be found on the University of Essex website.

Essex was amazing! The campus was seriously beautiful, had many a lovely afternoon sat by the lake on campus trying to revise. There’s a great community feel here, everyone is very friendly and there are amazing support services at the Union. Be sure to pick the right accommodation – if you’re ready to party every night, stay at the Towers, where no-one ever sleeps! If you’re a quieter type, the South Courts are a bit more relaxed although there’s still parties to be had. My teachers were also amazing, and I had a great time on my course.
