You can select different professional pathways through this degree, including translation and interpreting, or routes that lead to certification for TESOL or initial teacher training. One of your chosen languages may be learned from beginner's level. The course includes work or study abroad in two countries and you may study a third language during your studies. MORE ABOUT THIS COURSE Your course will provide you with access to our state-of-the-art interpreting suite and our multi-media language laboratories. You can study a third language as part of your course or take on a work-based unit to develop your employability. The University's partnerships with local and international businesses, charities and other organisations offers you a wide range of choices for placements and work during your year abroad. WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR? This course is for students who want to use their language skills in a multilingual professional environment. SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE GAINED Employability and career management skills are delivered throughout the curriculum. AFTER THE COURSE You will be prepared to enter fields such as translation, interpreting, language teaching, marketing, customer relations, and tourism, to name but a few.
In your first year you will choose two languages to study which you will continue to develop throughout your four years with this course. You will consolidate the knowledge you have in your chosen languages, while taking units that will provide the foundations for your undergraduate learning. You can also start a third language via the Institution-wide Language Programme (IWLP). In your second year you'll continue with the study of your chosen languages and be introduced to professional communication. You will also have the option of taking units in teaching English to speakers of other languages and obtain a qualification from Trinity College London. You will spend your third year abroad in the countries where your chosen languages are spoken. You will have the option to either study abroad in a university for one or two semesters, combine university study for one semester with a work placement for the other, or combine study at university over two semesters with a work placement for an additional three months over the summer. In your final year you will take at least one language-specific unit in each of your target languages including an applied languages research project or critical approaches to specialised translation.

There’s a lot to love in Pompey, a city geared towards students with loads of great bars, pubs, and shops. The nightlife is incredible, loads of student nights on and everyone is up for it. The main place to go out is the strip of clubs by the Guildhall, although there are lots of little places if you seek them out. The uni is also amazingly supportive, with great facilities and the Purple Door offering great careers support for all students, and the SU is also really helpful as well as serving amazing drinks and food.

Overall my university experience has been great and I would highly recommend Portsmouth due to the amount of investment they’re putting into it as it climbs the tables.
