Course details
Course UCAS code: C309
Qualification type:
  • MBiolSci, Full-time , Duration: 4 Years
Course Summary:
Our four-year MBiolSci focuses on whole-organism biology, specifically that of animals. Zoology at Sheffield covers areas such as animal conservation, biodiversity, molecular ecology, evolution and behaviour. Specialist modules cover areas such as animal behaviour, evolutionary biology, ecology, genetics, conservation, anatomy and physiology and climate change. The MBiolSci adds a fourth year of specialist research training, similar to a masters course, working in our labs and field sites. By studying zoology across all levels of biology you'll gain an understanding of how organisms work at the molecular level, how they behave and interact with each other and their environment, how they evolve, and the role they play in the functioning of ecosystems. The course is flexible. There are over 60 modules available, across all major areas of biology, so you can design your degree to suit your interests. There are also optional modules available in biomedical science, molecular and microbiology, even philosophy. You may need A Level Chemistry to take these modules. There are optional field courses in the Peak District National Park (UK), Anglesey (UK), Ireland, Arctic Sweden, the Mediterranean, the tropical rainforest in Borneo and the plains of Tanzania. These run in the summer between the second and third year. The Times Good University Guide has put Sheffield in the UK top 5 for biosciences every year since 2009.

"You aight, duck?" It’s a sort of mantra in Sheffield. An assortment of dubious endearing terms, generously drenched in Henderson’s Relish, served with a side of lowkey whining about The Arctic Monkeys. Before you know it you’ve caught the duck bug, whether you’re relaxing in one of the pubs on West Street or enjoying one of the massive nights out at the Union. Everything is within walking distance, but uphill – eventually you develop Viking legs and stop getting muscle soreness. The Peak District itself is part of town – ride the paternoster to the top of the Arts Tower and see for yourself. Aye duck, it’s reyt good.
